These fun little hippos come in a rage of bright vibrant colours. Each one is decorated with a traditional pattern as well. The pattern supplied will be random. They are made from soapstone, a natural rock found in the village of Tabaka near Kisii, Kenya. Most of the villagers make their living from creating these wonderful sculptures, the larger ones such as this are made by master craftsmen. The stone is quarried by hand in fairly shallow mines and then items are created using only basic hand tools. It is usually the men who carve and the women do the polishing. The painting can be done by men or women. Sizes may vary a little due to the handmade nature. On average these are 4" long (10 cm) As it is hand carved there is no manufacturer's packaging. |
