Mid 70's Olds S22 Professional Bass Trombone Single Valve in Bb F and pull to E 9 Inch Rose Brass bell .565 Bass Trombone Bore No Dents Excellent Slide Action Serial Number 845XXX-  I have a sweet spot for Olds Trombones. They made a number of different models of professional level trombones using different designs and bores to allow a player to select the one that fit his or her playing- almost a precurser to todays custome horns Edwards Shires etc. I have played a number of them and own several - I find they play superbly. I tried to pin down the details on this bass trombone's design history but it is a bit unclear. It is a S22 for sure and has a 9 inch bell and a .565 bore. That much I know. I also know that George Roberts was Olds most acclaimed bass trombone artist. It is unclear as to how much influence he had on this model. My best guess is that he was involved in the design but it is not one that was actually marketed as a "George Roberts model". Looking at charts, I do think this one was a Super model but the words are not engraved on the horn. Now what I can tell you after a bit of playing on it. It plays great! I used a big mouthpiece and the horn responds lightning fast. Sometimes it is tough to get a bass trombone to "pop" the low notes. They practically jump out on this horn. Fill it with air and it roars. Back off and it can just melt a melodic line. It also plays easily up into the high tenor range. Bell is a bit smaller than most of todays bass bones - Bore is a hair larger. Regardless - it works! Single valve is always preferential in playability to double valve. Less air disruption makes the note respond more easily. Has the long tuning slide on F attachment to allow you to pull to E so you can play a low B natural This trombone came to me in very good shape- went through the shop to have a couple small dings professionally removed and the slide cleaned and aligned. Inner tubes do have a bit of plating wear totaling about the size of a dime. However, even dry, the slide is quite good and properly lubed is very good- fast free smooth and quiet. Valve functions quickly and smoothly. Lacquer finish is very good for a horn of any age- outstanding for a 40 year old instrument. - Just some light scrathes here and there- Look at the pics - It is a beautiful trombone. Comes with the original case in shape almost as good as the trombone. Sorry - no mouthpiece came with this trombone and I don't have an appropriate extra. I was using my Giddings and Webster Chinook when I played it. You should audition several pices to find your own best fit. This is a chance to get a vintage classic that plays much better than many of today's new pro bass trombones. You will be hard pressed to find one in better condition! Bass trombones today start at about $3000. This should be a good value as well I will ship well packed to the lower 48 states for $60 and elsewhere by US Postal service for actual cost- Europe and Japan should expect to pay about $100 for shipping- Australia about $120 No Reserve or Buy It Now on this one- Auction sets the price and High Biudder wins it!!!!
