Item:153943332127A good 8-day longcase clock by Smith, Shepton Mallet with beautiful brass dial and interesting case features. ‘One piece’ brass dials were used by Southern makers for some time after painted dials became the norm from around 1780. The whole dial is one sheet of brass which has calibration and decorative engraving, this is then chemically silvered resulting in a much brighter finish than normal brass would give. The engraving on this dial is of a very high standard with crisp detailing. Of particular note are the floral themed ‘spandrels’ to the dial corners. The arch contains a moon-phase indicator by way of beautifully painted moon faces and intermediate scenes which slowly revolve over the course of the lunar month. The mahogany case has some very interesting and unusual features. The carving above the arch is quite unique, together with the spirally turned pillars and convex door frame it gives the hood a distinctly up-market appearance. The figured mahogany panels to the trunk door and base accentuate the feeling that this is up market clock. The clock is fully working including moon and date functions. Overall condition is good. The dial silvering is still bright although a few imperfections are showing through – quite a nice patinated finish really. The case has had some typical wood movement but is sound and solid with excellent colour. The movement is reasonably clean and recently serviced. Dimensions are: height 84 inches, width 21 inches (max), depth 10 inches. The clock is complete with weights, brass faced pendulum, winder and trunk door key (working lock).
