The clock is by the renowned Howell, James and Co London and Paris and the movement is stamped 'HOWELL JAMES & CO TO THE QUEEN'.The case is a pretty waisted shape and has wonderful elaborate brass work with a stunning hand painted floral sprays with figures to the front and floral sprays to the sides. The case is sitting on four Rococo style feet and the case is decorated with beautiful ormolu mounts. The dial is beautifully decorated and is set out in sections with Roman numerals with Arabic numerals above. The dial is covered by a thick convex beveled glass which is mounted in a pretty detailed brass frame. It is finished with a super pair of shaped period fingers. The eight day movement striking on a bell and impressed with 'MANUFACTURED IN PARIS' and is numbered 946' and '55'. It It has the clockmakers trademark 'A. D. Mougin, Deux Medailles' on the movement backplate. The pendulum is also stamped '946' showing it to be original.The clock is happily ticking away and keeping good time and the movement is lovely and clean as can be seen from the photographs as it has just been cleaned and serviced. The movement is accessed via a door to the rear. The clock comes complete with it's winding key and small key to regulate the fast / slow. AD Mougin was a famous clock maker in Paris from the mid eighteenth century forward. Mougin was one of the better clock makers of the period and possessed two gold medals from the Paris exhibitions A D Mougin is listed as working in Herimoncourt in the late 1800's which is in the Montbeliard region of France one of the main clock making areas. Mougin is said to have exhibited at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1889 and as his trademark contains Deux Medailles indicating that he presumably won two medals at exhibitions.We have the following information on 'HOWELL JAMES & CO LONDON & PARIS': 'Jewellers and silversmiths of Regent Street, London. Founded as silk mercers and retail jewellers, they rapidly expanded, employing over 100 staff by 1865. Noted for their variety and quality of stock, including items by designers and students of the South Kensington School, they exhibited in London in 1851 and 1862; in Paris in 1867; and at London in 1871 and 1872 when they showed jewellery by C.L. Eastlake, M.D. Wyatt, F. Leighton, and L.F. Day. From 1876, Howell, James & Co. held a series of popular exhibitions of ceramics painted by amateurs. The company's 1878 Paris Exhibition stand was designed by L.F. Day, who also contributed designs for Aesthetic Movement clocks along with the architect Thomas Harris. The firm stocked silver goods by J. Dixon & Co., Dresser's Linthorpe Pottery and Brannam Pottery from 1880 to 1889, when their employee, J. Llewellyn, moved to Liberty & Co. taking exclusive selling rights with him. The premises were reconstructed in 1881 incorporating art pottery galleries, where they held an exhibition of architectural faience made by Burmantofts to M. B.
