Seller: flowerheartsmile (896) 100%, Location: Bellevue, Washington, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 232857726815 SUPERB ANTIQUE JAPANESE KO-SOMETSUKE IMARI DISH Edo Period, 1600s - 1700's Exquisite, museum quality Edo Period blue and white porcelain dish. Hand painted in sublime, deep indigo underglaze of early Ko-sometsuke Arita Imari design. Bold imagery, outlined and filled with gradation and subtle wash, beautifully painted. The superb sometsuke (underglaze blue) decoration features a magnificent Kirin within the central cartouche, and wraps around the scalloped rim of the plate, with exotic potted botanicals, and small silk-robed boys bearing unfurling scrolls. Hand potted on a kick turned wheel with beautiful form, a gently flaring petal-like rim and short foot ring. The indigo cobalt glaze is the finest of the period, probably imported from Persia, and has been applied liberally with overlapping areas that are rich and exceptionally deep in color. Absolutely stunning. Measuring approximately 7 3/4" across, this elegant and tasteful Ko-Imari low bowl is in excellent antique condition with just minor wear commensurate with age. We note some original flaws and the usual kiln spots found on early Arita porcelain which add so much to the character of the piece. Magnificent, early Japanese sometsuke porcelain ware. Dating to the Samurai and Shogun era, 1600s to 1700's, this exceptionally fine 300+ year old porcelain work of art would make an outstanding centerpiece for the collector of world class Japanese antiques.
