Seller: Top-Rated Seller extrasx2 (1,153) 100%, Location: Redditch, Ships to: Free Local Pickup, Item: 173593932814 This is the most beautiful early 20th century mantel clock in a carved oak case with a silver dial engraved in a foliate pattern and with Roman numerals etched in black. Etched to the top centre of the dial, worn but still visible is the name Will E Halliwell - the case maker? Retailer? The brass movement is by Gustav Becker and is stamped on the back with his full BG mark, plus his Medaille D'Or award. It also has its pattern number - P18 and its serial number S 2270502. A heart shaped pendulum. The top of the chime is black and has the initials DRP The case itself is a beautiful design with a top arch and feature panels to each side (one is slightly loose but not detached). The back has a fretwork design - there are remnants of brown silk on the inside which obviously shielded the movement from dust but which must have disintegrated over time and have been removed. The arched glass door is bevelled. There is a small amount of wear to the black of some of the Roman numerals on the face - see photos The keys for the door and for winding are with the clock. The clock measures total 44cm high, 31cm wide and 20cm deep The provenance for this piece is great: it has a silver plaque screwed to the front which indicates that the clock was given as a gift by our client's late husband's grandfather Henry, and his sister Phyllis, to their parents on the occasion of their silver wedding anniversary on 4th June 1915, which must date this clock to a time before the beginning of World War I. We have wound this clock and it both keeps good time and chimes as it should every quarter hour. Once wound (gently) by us it then kept going in this was for nine hours before stopping. Considering it has been stored for many years and had layers of dust on it, that is remarkable. We have gently polished the wood and given the dial an equally gentle clean, no more. The movement has not been touched. Due to its fragility we would much prefer collection in person.
