It has a serial number 227757 stamped in to the back plate of the movement along with the Gustav Becker trade mark The serial no dates this clock between 1880 and 1885. The clock has a running duration of 8 days and is in excellent original working condition. Becker was born in 1819 and trained as a clockmaker in Germany and Austria. He opened his workshops in Freiburg, Silesia, Germany in 1850. Becker struggled with untrained help at first but won a Golden Medal, the Medaille d’or, at the 1852 Silesia Trade Expedition for design. Becker incorporated that first medal and his initials, G.B., into his trademark. This award gave him the recognition that he needed to attract skilled craftsmen to his workshops. Numerous awards and certificates followed, from trade expos as far away as Australia and as close to home as Vienna The slim and well-proportioned case is constructed predominantly in hardwood including the backboard made from solid quarter sawn oak. It has an excellent original gloss finish along with a nice patina consistent with a well preserved antique. Clocks by Gustav Becker are sought after by collectors worldwide although many examples were massed produced and of moderate quality. However, occasionally a clock is found that is of the quality that gained this maker his great reputation and this example is such a clock. Firstly the design and construction of the hardwood case is far superior to "normal" with canted corners with well carved adornments and fully turned pillars, these are part of the case construction and not attached to the door in the usual way. Also the integral top section above the door with elaborately carved mouldings supporting a finely carved detachable crest. The base is also a well-defined shape with a large half finial. The mouldings, finials, door embellishments and applied carvings are all in excellent condition. The glass to the door and the sides of the case is the original glass and the levelling screws and brackets are present. As with all Gustav Becker Vienna regulators the movement is of the highest quality having maintaining power and dead beat escapement with adjustable pallets for accurate timekeeping. The movement is clean and original to the case. It is keeping excellent time and striking reliably. Striking is every hour (once for each hour indicated) and then once for every half hour on a coiled steel gong fixed to the movement mounting bracket. I have included some pictures of the movement at the end of the item description. The white porcelain dial has Roman numerals and a subsidiary seconds dial, it is in excellent condition with no damage or cracks at all. The 2 pulleys and the brass cased weights and pendulum are also in excellent condition. The pierced steel hands are of typical Viennese style. As can be seen from the photographs, although over 120 years old this clock is in superb condition requiring no restoration at all. Height - 50 inches Max width - 16. inches (at top) Max depth - 7 inches Dial diameter - 7 inches. If the clock is to be sent by post it will be securely packaged in a custom made heavy duty double wall corrugated cardboard box with adequate bubble wrap and other materials to protect the clock, these boxes cost me £18. Only world leading couriers will be used with full on line tracking. Where possible the ebay global shipping programme will be used and again full on line tracking will be available. Of course collection of the clock is also an option and the new owner of the clock will be able to see the clock running and time will be taken to demonstrate the setting up procedure after the clock has been moved. All clocks are tested for a minimum of 1 month.
