Antique Carved Oak Longcase Clock
by
Alex Gordon, DUBLIN
DESCRIPTION: This is a rare 8-Day Brass Arch dial brass Oak longcase clock by Alex Gordon of Dublin. I believe there is another example of a longcase clock by this maker in the National Museum of Ireland. This clock is not currently in running/working condition as was a clock owned by my Father and was passed onto me. My Father had looked after this clock for many, many years and was in a good working order having been professionally cleaned and serviced etc over the years he had the clock but has since been left unattended for some years and will probably need some attention. The thread at the base of the pendulum holding the circular swing plate has also just snapped away(although there). The 2 clock weights, pendulum and an Eagle (with a broken/missing wing) for the top pediment is there with an extra spare/surplus squashed Eagle (if required) but was never originally used in situ by my Father (whole at top where it fits is also quite large to securely fix there). The narrow pediment at the base was recently applied/added to allow the clock to free stand more securely. There is also a vertical split within the front of the bottom base wooden casing. Other areas of the case also have some distressing/shinkage and areas of past repair as might be expected with a case of this age and someone might prefer to repair and improve? The shaped front case door appears to have a mahogany banding around its edge coloured to match the oak and has a working key in the door lock. An old brass and wooden handled key for the mechanism (unsure if the original but seems to be of a similar age and turns well) also available with the clock. Please do ask if further questions and I will try to answer as quickly and as best as I can but I'm definitely not an expert on old clocks... sorry. Please also check photos carefully !
There is another example of a longcase clock by Alex Gordon, Dublin in the National Museum of Ireland and he is listed in 'Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World Volume 1 by G.H. Ballie':
'GORDON, Alexnder. Dublin. 1756. died 1787. Watch. Dennison collection'.
DIMENSIONS: The approximate dimensions are: - 94 inches (239 cm) high - 22 inches (56 cm) across the widest part of the hood - 15.75 inches (40 cm) across the trunk - 19.75 inches (59.5 cm) across the widest part of the base
This wonderful clock has many fond memories and hope will again become a welcome addition to a new home.
