Seller: epone (819) 100%, Location: Sacramento, California, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 302747058191 Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Lovely antique Ko-Imari bowl, late Edo or early Meiji Period. The piece is decorated in classic style with soft blue underglaze that contrast beautifully with the brilliant red and gold enamels. The stylized lotus and the gold scroll pattern with the spiky central motif that seems to echo a pomegranate may hint at Turkish Iznik influence. The central medallion on the interior of the bowl depicts the three friends of winter; the pine, plum, and bamboo (Sho-Chiku-Bai). Because these plants thrive even through the bitter weather of winter, they have come to represent good fortune and resilience, they are often associated with the New Year in Japanese culture. The bowl is marked on the bottom in blue under-glaze, sei ka nensei, which imitates a Chinese Chenghua mark. The bowl measures 8 ½” in diameter and 5” tall. It has a chip on the inside of the rim and a smaller one on the outside of the rim, but there is no hidden stress fracture from this as the bowl still rings when tapped. Otherwise it is in good condition, with some minor surface wear, primarily evident in the gold. There are a few small glaze skips and some scattered dark flecks. The foot is slightly out of round, only really visible if you turn it over. Shipping includes insurance, though coverage will be impacted by US Postal Service policy.
