Modern replica (2006) of a solid wood and leather cushioned seat Mission/Arts and Crafts style chair designed by Charles P. Limbert in 1905. Charles P. Limbert (1854-1923) was one of the most successful furniture makers in the history of the American Arts and Crafts movement and his surviving pieces are highly sought after and seriously collected to this day (as are the furniture pieces of Gustav Stickley).   Examples of four other pieces of furniture from this particular Charles Rennie MacIntosh-influenced line of Limbert Cafe furniture can be seen on the photocopy (Photo #5).  The Limbert Cafe collection also features a window seat and three other types of small library or end table. The chair was built from highly figured solid quartersawn white oak, with the Centennial finish, and in the top grade of leather seating available (Classic Bourbon grade 5) in 2006. It would be a stunning and fitting addition to any English Arts and Crafts style home or flat, particularly to any English home or flat with remaining architectural features or fittings from the period of Art Nouveau through Art Deco (late Victorian era through to the 1950s).  The Limbert Cafe Chair has a strikingly simple Scottish art nouveau-influenced cut out and a wonderfully charming open lower shelf below the seat for holding an art book or two.  It compares favorably to furniture pieces designed by Charles Rennie Macintosh or by designers associated with the Vienna Secession. Very comfortable as a library chair for reading.  Wonderful as an occasional chair set opposite or in conversation with your livingroom sofa. See across all photos please for the excellent condition (Please look across the photos to get the clearest views and do please ask if you have any questions whatsoever. Further photo details can be provided upon request.) The Limbert Cafe Chair was made available for reissue by the modern L. & J.G. Stickley and Company as part of their revival Mission Furniture Catalog of designs beginning in 1989.   (Gustav Stickley and his brothers together founded Stickley Brothers & Co (Furniture) in 1883 in Brandt, PA.  This company dissolved in 1888 and reformed in several guises and American locations across the turn of the 20th century: including as the Gustave Stickley Company (1898) of Binghamton, NY (shortly later known as the Gustav Stickley Company, 1903).   By 1891, L & JG Stickley had been formed separately by two of Stickley's younger brothers in Grand Rapids, MI. Though no longer held by the Stickley family, L & JG Stickley survives to this day in Manlius, NY. Gustav Stickley became a leading voice in the American Arts and Crafts Movement and his design philosophy strongly influenced American Craftsman Architecture.) This Limbert Cafe Chair was commissioned by us new from L & JG Stickley through Rejuvenation Hardware, Inc. Portland, OR in 2006.   For more of the history, see the page (in photo #5) on the Limbert line of Mission furnishings reissued by L & JG Stickley in the L & JG Stickley catalog beginning in 1989. See the Wikipedia entry for Charles P.  Limbert for the history of his own base as a furniture maker and design leader in Grand Rapids, Michigan, for his importance in the development of Mission Style furniture in the US and in the American Arts and Crafts movement, influences on his work from Dutch folk art, the English Arts and Crafts movement, Charles Rennie MacIntosh and the Vienna Secession.
