Black Forest, Germany, Model: Lancet Mantel, Approx Date: 1920s -30s, Movement type: Schatz 8 day mechanical, Strike / Chime: Strike. Hammer on coiled gong., Pendulum / Balance: Pendulum, Case.: Light / Medium Oak veneer. Inlaid, Details: ANTIQUE AUGUST SCHATZ & SOHNE INLAID LIGHT OAK LANCET CASED STRIKING MANTEL CLOCK. 1920's -30's Here for auction is a very nice Lancet shaped mantel clock from the famous Black Forest clock company of August Schatz & Söhne. Jahresuhrenfabrik Triberg (year clock factory Triberg). The name Schatz is more well known for their 400 day/ Anniversary clocks, but they were also manufacturers of very fine clocks and clock parts. A company with a very long history going back to the late 1800's, they finally ceased trading after going bankrupt in 1986. The factory in Triberg in the Black Forest was totally demolished after 108 years of history. The clock movement is an 8 day two train pendulum controlled striking movement. The movement was dismantled for cleaning and service in 2015. No bushings were required and mainsprings were cleaned and lubricated. All plates were cleaned and the back plate polished and re-lacquered, as was the pendulum. Re-assembled, lubricated and checked for operation. The movement back plate carries the August Schatz trademark of two Elephants with there forelegs raised onto a clock. This trademark was registered in 1923, used until the 30's where the more familiar Script Schatz was used. Striking is carried out on a large coiled gong, with the hammer giving a single strike on the half hour and then on the hour it strikes the number indicated on the dial. Owing to the shape of the case it is a nice harmonious tone. Supplied with a winding key, which may not be the original. The 5½" silvered dial carries Arabic numerals in black. Numerals and outer markers in great condition with no loss . Some loss of lacquer to the dial face but I have not tried to clean it. Hands are conventional black spade. Dial is enclosed by a Brass glazed bezel that has been cleaned and re-lacquered, no dents or distortion, no drop in the hinge and shuts positively on its catch. The Lancet shaped wooden case is finished in light / medium Oak veneer to the main carcass with the lower base mouldings in light solid Oak. The front of the Lancet shaped case is inlaid with boxwood stringing with an extremely fine period design to the centre below the dial. Clock rests on four small brass bun feet. There are the occasional marks to be expected for the age , but nothing serious. French polish finish that just requires the occasional polish with good quality wax. Dimensions of the case: Height: 31 cm (12¼ inches). Width 22 cm (8¾ inches). Depth 13 cm (5¼ in). A very nice and honest clock in a great shape. Supplied with a key and the original pendulum. As with all pendulum controlled clocks it will require setting up in its new location. Clock should be placed on a level surface in all directions and then the pendulum bob should be hung on the leader and the clock put into beat.
