Seller: graham3943 (989) 100%, Location: Thames Ditton, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 362105055799 I'm retired and restore antique clocks as a hobby. I specialise in antique and vintage carriage clocks. I have had professional horological training. Earlier this month, I enjoyed bringing this particular clock back to something resembling the state it was in when it was first made about 120 years ago. It was made by Couaillet Freres in Paris and bears that firm's characteristic arrow on the back plate of the movement. AN IMMACULATE ANTIQUE FRENCH SERPENTINE CASED CARRIAGE CLOCK WITH ORIGINAL TRAVEL CASE AND KEY CASE: Solid good quality brass in sound original condition. It has a curved "serpentine" case and sits on four small turned brass bun feet. All parts of the case are stamped with the same number (18), which shows it to be original. I dismantled it completely, cleaned off years of grime and tarnish then polished all the parts carefully by hand so as to preserve all the original features. I then gave them a coat of protective micro crystalline wax polish to preserve the finish and delay the tarnishing process in future. The clock now has a soft patina and looks much as it would have done when new.MOVEMENT: Well engineered solid brass and polished steel "0bis" 8 day numbered (23 inside both plates), movement made by Couaillet Freres in Paris at the end of the C19th. It is stamped "MADE IN FRANCE" under the click spring on the back plate. It has a replacement Swiss lever escapement which has good amplitude and keeps good time over an 8 day period. As with the case, I completely dismantled the movement having first checked it over for wear. I cleaned all parts by hand, polished the pivots and wheels in the lathe, pegged out the sinks and after rebuilding the movement, oiled it with appropriate grade clock and watch oil. It is now working beautifully and should not need servicing again for years.DIAL: White enamel-on-copper in good original condition. I wanted to keep the dial as it bears the name of the original retailer (Stewart & Co., 65A, Gracechurch Street, London E.C.), so I minimised some small hairline cracks to the top right corner: these are now almost invisible and are in any case largely covered by the brass case. After cleaning, the bold roman numerals and chapter ring are crystal clear. Each five minute marker is picked out with a small gold dot. The blued steel hands are original and are in perfect condition.GLASSES: All five thick bevelled glasses are in perfect condition save for the tiny chip to the bottom corner of the rear door glass which really hardly notices: it doesn't show in the photo's.KEY: The clock comes with a classic double-ended brass key which sits in a dedicated slot in the travel case. It fits both winding arbours very snugly. One end is for winding the movement and the other is for adjusting the hands. The timekeeping can be adjusted by using the fast/slow index lever which is accessed through the rear door.TRAVEL CASE: Burgundy faux leather with a purple velvet lining. The travel case is original and is shaped to accommodate the serpentine shape of the clock case. It's in pretty good condition for its age (See the condition report above).CARE AND MAINTENANCE: I will enclose a brief note with the clock explaining how to get it started after its journey through the post. I will also include my contact details should you have any questions later about care. POSTAGE AND PACKAGING: Postage will be by a tracked and insured service. The clock will be packed in a sturdy box with plenty of bubble wrap and packaging pellets. UK £10.00; EU £20.00; ELSEWHERE £30.00. I should be grateful if, before bidding, you would take a few moments to look through my feedback reports. They are 100% positive over more than 10 years and covering nearly 1000 transactions. Your guarantee is that I wish to retain that positive record. I hope therefore that you feel you can bid with total confidence. Good luck if you decide to do so. Condition: This clock is in very good condition having just been sympathetically restored and serviced. There are some hairline cracks to the top right corner of the dial which I have minimised: you wouldn't know they were there unless it was pointed out!. The travel case is missing its carrying handle and inspection glass. Otherwise it's in pretty good condition; The slide in protective front cover is there, the catch works as it should and the purple velvet lining is in reasonable condition., Age: Antique, Pre-1900, Sub-Type: Carriage Clock, Type: French made antique carriage clock, Style/ Origin/ Theme: French, Material: Brass, Features: 8-Day
