Old Indonesian Borneo Kayan Dayak Ceremonial Dish .

Finely sculpted ceremonial dish.  Used for placement of food and other offerings during ceremonial rituals.  Shows the legendary Hornbill bird's distinctive long-beaked face in profile, its long neck, and its big body carved from one piece of hard wood.  The legs are carved separately and seamlessly attached as the stand of the dish.

Sarawak dark hard wood and rattan .  Plaited construction of the rattan edge-embellishment, which was added to represent the bird's feathery body.  The elegantly shaped dish is also incised in front to represent the Hornbill's wings.

Very Fine.  Beautiful patina, dark color throughout, smooth to one’s touch from previous use and generations of human touch. The lightly neutral-lacquered rattan embellishment is original.  Looks and feels smooth and naturally shiny, which means that the piece was kept clean and lightly waxed.

Large size:  3 inches (length/height) X 18 inches (width/diameter, from tail to beak).   It is not especially heavy (about 5 pounds) but is irregularly-sized.

"The importance of ethnic and tribal art cannot be overstated. Its complex history with Modernism is intriguing and complex. Each informs the other. For anyone interested in how the human mind is compelled to make experience tangible, then one must consider this art. Look at it, wonder about it, live with it, be inspired by it, and let it broaden your world” (Douglas Dawson).
