Item Details Antique French Empire Mantel Clock, circa 1825 Signed Alliez And Berguer  & Japy Freres  Offers Welcome A very fine and rare example of a French Empire double patinated silk suspended mantel clock depicting a young gentleman dressed in smart clothes illustrating the allegory of literature featuring fine detail. The figure is elegantly seated on the clocks drum case with his legs crossed and using his hand to support his head, looking into the distance. The figure of the gentleman has been finely chiselled; he has very realistic features; pay particular attention to the face, hands and finger nails. The gentleman's hand has been strategically placed on the books by the sculptor in order to draw the audiences attention to them and remind them of the importance of literature and the value one gains from their study. The clock demonstrates the finest quality of craftsmanship. To the front elevation, the clock features a white enamel dial with back hand painted Roman numerals. This fine clock stands upon a Rococo style ormolu plinth and is surrounded by foliage.  The clock features a twin train 8 day mechanical movement striking the hours and half on a bell. The clock is regulated by a count wheel. The clock and movement have been stamped by the makers 'Alliez and Breguer' alongside 'Japy Freres'. The bell, pendulum and winding key are present. Approximate dimensions: 30 cm high x 22 cm wide Approximate Weight: 1882 grams Condition: Overall, the clock is in good working condition. The ormolu is in good condition and retains a very good colour.
