Seller: graham3943 (967) 100%, Location: Thames Ditton (nr. Hampton Court), Surrey, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 361837461965 I AM NOT A DEALER; I AM RETIRED AND HAVE HAD PROFESSIONAL HOROLOGICAL TRAINING. I HAVE BEEN RESTORING ANTIQUE AND VINTAGE CLOCKS AS AN INTEREST IN MY SPARE TIME FOR OVER 35 YEARS. I SPECIALISE IN CARRIAGE CLOCKS. THIS CLASSIC ANTIQUE CARRIAGE CLOCK WAS MADE C1925 BY COUAILLET FRERES. IT IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION HAVING BEEN COMPLETELY OVERHAULED AND SERVICED EARLIER THIS MONTH. Apart from the handle, this antique French clock is identical to that illustrated in Charles Allix's definitive book "Carriage Clocks, Their History and Development" (Plate VII/23 Page 171). It has what is known as a "Louis XV Doucine" case* with a classic "0bis" movement.*this case design was introduced shortly before 1900 and continued until W.W II. The top and bottom sections of the front, sides and back are of an ogee or serpentine shape - an influence apparently borrowed from furniture. SIZE: Height (with handle folded down) 5 (12.5 cms); Width 3 1/4 inches (8 cms); Depth 2 3/4 inches (7 cms) CASE: Good quality cast brass with folding solid brass handle (which replicates the serpentine shape of the base and top), and sitting on four small turned brass feet. The rear door opens and closes with satisfying precision - a good indication that the clock has not been dropped in the past or suffered any other damage! All case parts are stamped with the same number (4) which shows it to be all totally original. The case was very badly tarnished when I acquired the clock, so I completely dismantled it and stripped off what remained of the lacquer before polishing each part carefully by hand. I then gave the case parts a coating of special protective wax polish to delay the tarnishing process in future. I am really pleased with the way it has restored - it now has a lustrous patina which will last for years before it needs cleaning again. MOVEMENT : Very well engineered good quality solid brass 8-day "0bis" movement by Couaillet Freres with its original 7 jewel lever escapement - which works robustly with excellent amplitude and a quiet tick. It is numbered 73 inside both plates and bears the makers trade mark arrow on the back plate while "FRANCE" is stamped in the bottom right hand corner of the back plate. All the back plate screws have been attractively blued. As with the case, I stripped the movement down completely, checked it carefully for wear, polished the pivots on the lathe, pegged out the sinks then cleaned and hand polished each component. I also cleaned and oiled the escapement. After rebuilding the movement, I oiled it with fine grade clock and watch oil. It now works perfectly and will not need servicing again for years. DIAL: White enamel-on-copper in good condition. As it was the original dial, I obviously wanted to keep it with the clock and so repaired some minor damage to the top left corner. As this repair can really only be seen when the movement is taken out of the case, it does not show in the photographs: I mention it only for the sake of accuracy. The chapter ring and bold roman numerals are crisp and clean and as good as when the clock left the factory. The polished blued steel hands are also in perfect condition. GLASSES: The front, rear and two side glasses are in perfect condition. The small rectangular top glass has a small crack across one corner which does not show in the pictures and scarcely notices on display. KEY: The clock comes with a classic double-ended brass key: one end winds the 8-day movement and the other is for adjusting the hands. INSTRUCTIONS: I will enclose simple instructions explaining how to get the clock started if it has stopped during its journey through the post. I will also include my contact details so that you can get in touch with me regarding care and maintenance. This is a really good example of these sought after classic antique carriage clocks. The clock is heavy (about 1 kilo when packed), which is reflected in the shipping costs - PACKAGING (new double boxes) and POSTAGE (Special Delivery, tracked & insured): UK £10.00; EU £20.00 (approx. 25 Euros); Elsewhere £30.00 I pack well, post promptly, and have 100% positive feedback on eBay - which I would urge you to read before bidding. Buyer, Georgia, USA Thank you very much for looking and good luck should you decide to bid! Condition: This fine French antique Louis XV Doucine case carriage clock with an 0bis movement (by Couaillet Freres) is in very good condition. The case, movement and the five thick bevelled glasses are all in perfect condition (save for a small crack to one corner of the top glass). The dial is original and has a small chip to the top left corner which I have filled. The repair is only visible when the movement is removed from the case and so does not show in the photo's. The clock has its original Swiss lever escapement and comes with a classic double-ended brass carriage clock key. These "Serpentine" cases are becoming relatively hard to find., Age: Antique, Pre-1900, Type: Mantel/ Carriage Clock, Sub-Type: Carriage Clock, Style/ Origin/ Theme: French, Material: Brass, Features: 8-Day
