A wonderful Georgian indenture dated FEBRUARY 1st 1738. This dates to the reign of KING GEORGE II. Beautifully handwritten on vellum with assorted embossed paper stamps and a lovely crested armorial seal in red wax attached to a green silk ribbon. A neat and small size. The indenture between a WALTER COWPERTHWAITE OF CHURCH TOWN IN THE PARISH OF CARTMELL AND COUNTY OF LANCASTER and JOHN ROBINSON OF NEWBRIDGE IN THE PARISH OF CARTMELL. In flowery legal speak it is a doucument related to land usage and interestingly includes the wording “ therefore the yearly rent of one peppercorn at the feast of St Michaell”. Very good condition indeed, with no losses tears or holes…all intact! A lovely piece of early Georgian social history when legal deeds and documents were presented in this manner and have survived into the twenty first century.
