MORE PICTURES AFTER ITEM DESCRIPTION

This well figured walnut veneered striking Vienna wall clock was manufactured by Gustav Becker in Germany, there is a serial no 1207709 stamped into the back plate of the movement dating this clock 1892-1900. The Gustav Becker trade mark is also on the dial center, a picture of this is included after the item description. The clock has a running duration of 8 days and is in excellent and original condition

Becker was born in 1819 and trained as a clockmaker in Germany and Austria. He opened his workshops in Freiburg, Silesia, Germany in 1850. Becker struggled with untrained help at first but won a Golden Medal, the Medaille d’or, at the 1852 Silesia Trade Exposition for design. Becker incorporated that first medal and his initials, G.B., into his trademark. This award gave him the recognition that he needed to attract skilled craftsmen to his workshops. Numerous awards and certificates followed, from trade expos as far as Australia and as close to home as Vienna

The high quality, elaborate and imposing case is unusual in design and in very good condition, it is veneered in a well figured walnut and has a nice original gloss finish along with an excellent patina consistent with a well preserved antique. The door to the case is of the picture frame style and is flanked with fluted pillars and turned and carved adornments. The top pediment is of the architectural style with two turned mouldings and a large central cresting with. The mouldings, finials, Carvings. The case still retains the brass levelling screws and brackets as well as the original glass to the door and the sides of the case.

Unlike most of the movements found in spring driven Vienna wall clocks the movement is of the highest quality having solid plates and pinions and dead beat escapement for accurate time keeping. The movement is clean and is original to the case. It is keeping excellent time and striking reliably. Striking is every hour (once for each hour indicated) and then once for every half hour on a coiled steel gong fixed to the movement mounting bracket.  I have included some pictures of the movement at the end of the item description

The white porcelain dial has Roman numerals, it is in excellent condition with the exception of a very faint hairline in the dial center. The grid iron pendulum is also in excellent condition. The pierced steel hands are of typical Viennese style

As can be seen from the photographs, although over 120 years old this clock is in superb condition requiring no restoration at all.
