Seller: leeyacat (886) 100%, Location: Garnett, Kansas, Ships to: US & many other countries, Item: 112827625652 Antique Journal Handwritten Documentationby Albion Sanborn in the Spring Months of 1874 This journal documents the journey of one man, Albion Sanborn, upon the SS Henry Chauncey Steamship of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company.I researched this ship online and it's an interesting history.Albion tells his tales of travel upon the Henry Chauncey. He leaves his only home of New England to seek a new adventure leavingbehind his wife and child to return at an unspecified date.He writes in detail about the ships journey through the Panama Canalmentioning what it's like in such places as Jamaica and Punta Arenes, among other destinations. He writes about people of different ethnicities on board as well as transporting goods. He speaks often about the Sabbath Day and he is a church-goer.As he arrives to California he documents some landmarks, towns and people. He writes briefly about the mines and prospectors in a passage. At the end he writes mostly about working in a "shop" daily andit winds down after that (61 pages of his experience). Most of those 61 pages are his experience aboard the ship.I took pictures of journal entries toward the beginning and the ending of the journal;there is a lot in the middle as he tells of people and places on board. He documents from March 14th to June 14th of 1874.An interesting read and a riveting journey into the pastof what it was like to take a trip on a steamship during an amazing time in our history. He also has a "devotional" section after his last passagewhere he has written poems and the like (7 pages of poems and quotes).I have just given a quick synopsis of this journal. There are a lot of neat detailsabout the time period that are so compelling. Even his "voice" and dialect shine through from that era; my favorite beingwhen he takes a little ride in Jamaica on a carriage of the "one horse persuasion".The cover is loose toward the bottom. The binding is held together by thread on the top, center and bottom and the cover has worn away from the thread from being handled. The ink is still dark and legible, however, the handwriting can be a little difficult to read at times. I was able to decipher some hard-to-read wordswith a little more attention to detail. Journal measures 8 1/4" x 6 1/2".If you have any questions before bidding, don't hesitate to send me a message.
