DESCRIPTION: This an exquisite gesso dial eight-day longcase clock of pretty petite slim proportions and has a stunning quality 5 pillar movement. The clock is by the maker John Agar MALTON. This is a fine example of a Georgian clock by Yorkshire clockmakers which is reflected in the fact that it has a five pillar movement. This clock is absolutely perfect for anyone looking for a clock to place straight into their home.
The case is a wonderful flame mahogany with a lovely arch shaped pediment cresting to the hood which is then finished with three finials. The hood door is flanked with full fluted columns with terminate in brass capitals. To the side of the hood are lovely arched top glass panels which allow the movement to be viewed. Below the hood is lovely dentile work.
The trunk has a pretty shaped fill length door which is flanked by chamfered corners which are nicely reeded. There is a pretty brass escutcheon to the door.
The base also has a lovely frame of stringing surrounded by cross banding and is flanked by chamfered corners which are nicely reeded. It is then raised on a lovely shaped plinth.
The eight-day movement is super being 5 pillar. The arched dial with maker’s name 'Jno Agar MALTON' has to the arch a pretty painted scene of a small boat on the water adjacent to a historical building. The corners are then adorned with gesso work. There are two Agar of MALTON listed in ‘Yorkshire Clockmakers by Brian Loomes’ but as this clock dates to circa 1790 this will be by John II:
It is also noted that John Agar seems to have been influenced by Henry Hindley, York's finest clockmaker, some of his work, as is the case with this clock, shows Hindley features. Many members of the Agar family worked as clock and watchmakers and are recorded in 'Yorkshire Clockmakers by Brian Loomes’.
DIMENSIONS: The approximate dimensions are: - 89.25 inches (227 cm) high to top of finial / 85.75 inches (218 cm) high to top of clock - 19.75 inches / 50 cm across the widest part of the hood - 12.25 inches / 31 cm across the trunk - 17.75 inches / 35 cm across the widest part of the base. - 10.75 inches / 27 cm across deepest point namely the hood
As can be seen from these dimension this is a clock of slim proportions.
