DESCRIPTION:
This is an exquisite inlaid mahogany Rolling Moon longcase clock, which is of super grand proportions. It has an eight-day movement on a broken arch painted face with rolling moon which is signed 'J. Pennington, Liverpool'. This truly is a majestic clock which has the most fantastic mahogany case and is incredibly detailed.
If we start with the hood, this has swan necks with arched moulded cornice. Above the hood door is beautifully inlaid with brass which sets it off superbly. To the swan necks and above the door is also wonderful carved detailing. The hood door and is flanked by superb full turned columns. The top of the clock is finished with three upstands, please note in the photographs we had to remove the central upstand because it could not be fitted into the where the photographs are taken , but it has been put back on the clock when the measurements were taken.
Moving down to the trunk, the lovely shaped door which is flanked by candy twist columns which are exquisite. The door contains the most wonderful flame of mahogany and is cross banded and inlaid with mahogany. The key hole has a lovely diamond shape of inlay.
The base is is again beautifully cross banded and inlaid with mahogany and the centre panel has a wonderful flame of mahogany, the front corners are canted and again have been beautifully inlaid. The base is then raised a lovely shaped feet.
The eight-day movement has a broken arch painted face with rolling moon and subsidiary second dial and date aperture. The four corners are beautifully adorned with beautiful delicately painted ladies depicting the four seasons. The clock has very pretty fingers.
The dial bears the makers name 'J. Pennington, Liverpool'. In 'LANCASHIRE CLOCKS AND CLOCKMAKERS by BRIAN LOOMES':
'Pennington, John. Liverpool. 17 Hart St in 1824. One such also at 83 London Road in 1824. Same man?'
DIMENSIONS:
The approximate dimensions are:
- 8 foot 2.5 inches (250 cm) high
- 23 inches (58.5 cm) across the widest part of the hood
- 17.5 inches (44.5 cm) across the trunk
- 21.75 inches (55 cm) across the widest part of the base
As can be seen from these dimension this is a clock of lovely proportions.
CONDITION:
The clock is in wonderful condition as can be seen from the photographs. The movement is is happily ticking and chiming having recently been cleaned and serviced.
