This is a Victorian mahogany veneer and gilt metal banded writing slope.  It has a rectangular gilt metal cartouche on its lid and a matching lock escutcheon on its front. The base of the slope has a padded black paper covering that is now worn and faded. Inside the box it is edged with mahogany veneer. It also has a brass mortice lock as well as brass hinges and a skiver catch. Its black leather skiver is edged with gilt tooling and that itself is framed with a mahogany veneer border. The two compartments beneath the skiver tops are also veneered in mahogany. Condition The item is in good condition for its age but does have some areas that need to be restored.  It is covered in numerous scuffs, scratches and marks on its body too many to catalogue. On the outside of the writing slope the main areas of damage to the veneer are on the bottom edge of the box front where long thin sections have been lost running nearly the entire length of the base. This can be seen in photographs 1-4 and 20. Smaller loses to the veneer can be seen at all eight of the writing slopes outer corners which are missing. There are also small nibbles to the veneer in the area above the lock escutcheon and the lower edge of the lid.  On the top of the lid of the slope small sections of veneer have been lost along the back edge of the slope and the right side edge. The missing sections along the right edge can be seen in photographs 11 and 16. On the back of the slope a small amount of veneer is missing on its top edge near its middle and on its bottom edge near its right corner. This can be seen in photograph 7. On the right side of the box a small amount of veneer has been lost just below the brass hinge. This can be seen in photographs 8-9. There are some signs of water damage to the veneer which can be seen in photographs 1-3, 6-8 and 11. Unusually, there are no cracks in the veneer of the outside of the box. The only cracks to the veneer I could find were on the inside of the box underneath the lower skiver where there are four hairline cracks which are almost invisible. These can just be seen in photograph 14. The gilt metal banding on the box is scratched in many places; especially around the keyhole on the keyhole escutcheon. Someone has also scratched the letters "E D" on the cartouche on the top of the box lid which needs to be polished out. On the lid of the box the gilt metal band on the right side is starting to separate from the top. An old rudimentary repair has been made with a slotted screw that needs to be removed and fixed. This can be seen in photographs 1-3 and 16-17. This gilt metal band also has some ink stains and other marks on it. This can be seen in photographs 11 and 18-19. As mentioned above the base of the box is covered in a black padded paper which is scuffed and frayed at its edges. On the inside of the writing slope there are numerous small areas of veneer missing around the edges of the box; especially on the edge of the pen rest compartment. Please see photograph 13 for more information. The veneer border around the skiver is missing a larger section of veneer near the pen rest and the sections near the hinges are damaged; possibly from super glue being applied on their surfaces. The tooled leather skiver is torn in two places on its surface and has separated from the body of the box. Black insulation tape has been placed over the skiver to keep it connected to the box body. This can be seen in photograph 13 and needs to be replaced. Surprisingly for an item of its age there are no splits or cracks in the box itself. The hinges are solid and the lid closes correctly and securely.  There are no signs of woodworm in the box. The key is missing for the lock. The brass lock keep has been removed from the lid so that it can be opened and closed without catching on the lock. The brass lock keep will be sent along with the writing slope. Unfortunately I do not have any of the brass screws that would hold it in place. This would make a good restoration project. Please see the photographs for an accurate representation of the item's overall condition. They also form an important part of the item's description. It is approximately 145mm high by 355mm wide by 224mm deep. It weighs approximately 2.084 Kg The item comes from a pet free home. Please note we do not post outside of the UK.
