This antique Godey Ladys books have a black and brown leather cover. There is wear to the spine and boards on the 1855 book and foxing to most of the pages and colored plates (please look at all photos carefully), but for a book that is 160 years old, it is in remarkable condition. The colored fashion plates are hand-colored, depicting the latest in women's fashion at the time. More than 150 women were employed to hand tint the plates for each issue. Black and white steel and copper engravings were also used to illustrate the published articles. It is an example of lovely color chromolithography, poetry, articles, and engravings, and a history of fashions and occupations in the mid to late 1800s.

CONDITION 1855 BOOK This book is in, as is fair condition with the front cover detached and worn for its age and use. There is wear to the spine, discoloration, chipped & creased edges and foxing to most of the pages. The tissue thin page between the engravings and colored fashion plate pages are missing. I believe a few of the beginning pages are missing. The lead page that tells volume number and months are missing.

APPROXIMATE MEASUREMENTS Both books measure 6-1/4 inches x 9-3/4 inches x 2-1/2 inches thick.

A LITTLE HISTORY The Godey's Lady's Book was founded in 1830 by Louis A. Godey, and until 1898 it was one of the most popular and long-lived women's magazines. Issues included fiction, non-fiction, decorating advice, fashion, needlework instructions, handicrafts and music. Over time the magazine evolved into an important literary magazine and published articles and book reviews by notable nineteenth-century writers including Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Oliver Wendell Holmes and Washington Irving. Much of the success of The Lady's Book was due to "the lady editor" Sarah Josepha Hale, until she retired in 1877. Just prior to the civil War, she built the subscription list to more than 150,000--the largest circulation attained by any monthly magazine at that time. Mrs. Hale was also an early advocate of women's rights, argued for the retention of property rights for married women, started the first day nursery, helped organize Vassar College, persuaded Abraham Lincoln to declare Thanksgiving a national holiday, and was the author of the nursery rhyme, "Mary Had a Little Lamb."

Our antique textiles are collectible and are not new and not reproductions, and have lived a long and eventful life and sometimes developing flaws. We do not clean or alter unless stated in listing, and most times have been in storage for many decades picking up old age storage oxidation spots.
