This is a wonderful example of 17th century oak coffer in very good condition for its age. Coffer has 3 panels to the top,single panels to the sides and a panelled back. Coffer has a lift up lid with the original wire hinges and the original candle box with lift up lid is on the right hand side. The base of the coffer has been lined in brown paper-probably Victorian. The lock plate is probably a replacement but very old. The coffer has carvings to the front with classic lozenge shapes and simple floral carvings. A nice feature is the caved initials to the side of the coffer-R R R- presumably the original owner.

The condition of the coffer is very good for its age- the condition of the stiles(feet) is a real plus, they are usually much more worn down than this but these have retained their height. It has survived with its original carving in tact- the Victorians recarved a great many coffers to modernise them. The colour and patina are fabulous. It is a good example of traditional pegged construction furniture, a very useful , small handsome piece of furniture. Marks of use and age and some old Victorian repairs.
