Antique Papal Bull of Pope Urban lll (1185-1187). Issued by Pope Unban lll in the latter years of King Henry ll of England this 12th century lead seal of 44.6 grams and 37.2mm wide would have been attached to Papal documents sent from Rome which signified the document was issued with the Pope's authority. It was attached to the document by coloured silk lace or hemp cord. One face of the seal bears the name of the issuing Pope URBANUS.PP.III . PP has a contraction mark over - an abbreviation for PAPA. Within a circle of pellets on the other face are the opposed heads of Saints Peter and Paul with a cruciform emblem between and the identifying abbreviated legend SPASE Sanctus Paulus Sanctus Petrus (Saint Paul, Saint Peter). Currently framed under glass in front of a picture of Pope Urban III. Owned by me for 45 years and found in 1972 among the possessions of my late mother - and how she got it I have so idea at all!! On the website www.timelineauctions.com/lot/medieval-lead-papal-bulla-seal-alexander-iv/1295/ a later dated bull sold for £828 (including premium) so this earlier and rarer item (Pope Urbanus III only reigned for TWO YEARS) is clearly a bargain!
