DESCRIPTION: This is a wonderful Rolling Moon Oak and Mahogany long case clock, with an eight-day movement on a broken arch brass dial with a rolling moon. The clock is made by Jno Stanyer of Nantwich. This clock is absolutely perfect for anyone looking for a clock to place straight into their home.
If we start with the hood, this has swan necks which are finished with lovely carved pateras. Above the hood door is pretty shaped moulding. The door is mahogany cross banded and has a pretty little brass knob. Pretty reeded columns flank the hood door.
If we then move down to the trunk it has a lovely shaped fully length shaped door which is cross banded in mahogany and oak with some lovely medullary rays has been utilised. The door is also complete with it's lock and key which is fully working. The door is then flanked by quarter reeded columns.
Finally the base has a lovely shaped applied panel which is nicely cross banded in mahogany and is flanked by canted corners. The clock is then raised on lovely ogee bracket feet.
The dial with makers name of ' Jno Stanyer of Nantwich ', has the four corners adorned with pretty maiden head sprandrels. The the centre of the dial is also superbly engraved. The arch contains the moon disk which is beautifully adorned with a scene of a gentleman drinking from a fountain with a cow by his side, a lovely historic building scene and two moons. The dial is set out with Roman Numerals with small Arabic Numerals above. There are subsidiary second dial and date aperture. The dial also has the most wonderful fingers.
The movement is eight day duration and is rack striking on a single bell. The movement is in perfect working order having recently been professionally cleaned and serviced. As can be seen from the photographs the movement is immaculately clean. There are two 'John Stanyer, Nantwich' listed in 'Clockmakers of Cheshire by Keith Applyby' who were father and son. As this clock dates to circa 1760 / 1780 this will be by John Stanyer Senior: - 'STANYER John NANTWICH Clockmaker Looked after Wrenbury Church Clock in 1779 - 91. Had son who was a Freeman of Chester. Working in Nantwich 1782'.
