The two then marry exactly using the cut and the contra point married together This also creates in effect two distinct patterns, one where the brass is the main pattern and the other (almost like a negative) where the tortoise shell is the main pattern. Wonderful French 19th Century Boulle work (see below), red tortoiseshell and brass marquetry  clock from Paris - Circa 1861-65. Made by Samuel Marti. One of the famous French clock makers of the 19th Century.  Samuel Marti (1811-1869)  was a Swiss industrialist and watchmaker who came to Montbeliard , France in 1830. Here he created a clock movement factory with two partners but became sole owner in 1841 under the name S.Marti et Cie. He quickly rose to fame for the quality of his work and opened a workshop in Paris on the Rue Orleans-Marais in 1850 and a second In the Rue Charlot in1860. He won many important medals including the Bronze medal for outstanding clockmaking in 1860. He was succeeded by his son Augustus S. Marti who continued the business extremely successfully, gaining the silver medal for clock making in 1889 and the gold medal in 1900. With the stamps and serial number we can date the clock to between 1862 and 1865 and to Samuel rather than Augustus. The stamp also confirms that the clock still has its original pendulum as the serial numbers are the same on both the movement and the pendulum. The name on the dial of the clock is that of Lay, an important clock retailer in Paris based in the famous Passage de Jouffroy, 9eme arrondissement, Paris where he had three shops 26,28 &29. It was quite common for successful clock retailers to have the dials painted with their name and also add their stamp to the movement. I have included a picture of this Passage de Jouffroy in the pictures as it is today. The clock is very much in the Louis XV Baroque taste. It features a beautiful enamel dial in white and royal blue  The clock chimes with a bell, which strikes on the half and full hours. Other features: Gilded bronze mounts. Stunning gilt and enamel dial.  8 day movement The clock movement is a two train movement meaning it strikes the Hours and half hours.  Boulle work is an extremely complicated form of veneering where a thin sheet of brass or pewter are overlaid on a similar sheet of often tortoise shell and an elaborate "arabesque" design cut through both sheets creating a design and where cut through a contra point design. The two then marry exactly using the cut and the contra point married together This also creates in effect two distinct patterns, one where the brass is the main pattern and the other (almost like a negative) where the tortoise shell is the main pattern. It was perfected in the 17th Century by Andre Charles Boulle, one of the greatest ever French cabinet makers hence the name "Boulle work". Due to the complications of the process you would normally only find true Boulle work on the finest pieces. A very impressive mantel clock standing 30cm (12") tall.
