GJPaw Auctions is pleased to offer a superb folk art votive painting from Mexico, depicting Saint Joseph with Christ Child. Votive paintings go by several names in Spanish such as “ex voto,” “retablo” or “lamina,” which refer to their purpose, place found, or the material from which they are made.   An ex-voto is a votive offering to a saint or to a divinity. It is given in fulfillment of a vow (hence the Latin term, short for ex voto suscepto , "from the vow made") or in gratitude or devotion. Initially, votive paintings depicted images of saints or other religious figures, which were then donated to a church. Later, narrative images, telling the personal story of a miracle or favor received became the norm. These paintings were first produced by the wealthy and often on canvas; however, as sheets of tin became affordable, lower classes began to have them painted on this medium. The narrative version on metal sheets is now the traditional and representative form of votive paintings, although modern works can be executed on paper or any other medium. Votive paintings can be found by the thousands in many locations in Mexico although certain shrines and sanctuaries such as that of the Virgin of Guadalupe and in Chalma attract a very large number of offerings. Due their proliferation, especially in the 18th and 19th century, many older votive paintings were either thrown away or sold and found their way into public and private collections. Interest in the paintings began with Diego Rivera, who considered them to be an important testimony to Mexican history and culture. He and Frida Kahlo became the first collectors. By the end of the 20th century, they became valuable collectors’ items and can now be found in museums and private collections in various parts of the world. This superb example is painting on tin. It measures 22 inches in width by 2 inches in depth by 26 inches in height (55.8 cm by 5.08 cm by 66.0 cm), including the custom frame, which has been made to museum standards. It is in very good condition, showing wear commensurate with age, and dates probably to the late 19th century. A fine collector’s piece, it would make a superb addition to any collection of Mexican folk art, or art in general.
