This is a wonderful and very rare 7 1/2 inch dial SOLID mahogany cased fusee RAILWAY wall clock. The movement to this clock is excellent being a very good quality English chain fusee movement.
This very rare railway clock with a cast brass bezel has is a catch for closing and releasing the dial. The mahogany case with a one piece turned surround which is a wonderful patina which can only be gained through age, and is held onto the back box by two tapered pegs. The back box is of typical design with one side door and a bottom door secured by a brass lock which is complete with its lock and key. When the movement needs to be accessed the catch is simply released to the side which then allows the pendulum to be hung easily. The dial is marked out with Roman numerals and is signed with 'B.R.(S) John Walker 1 SOUTH MOLTON ST' and 'London 88.SE' . The dial is a little faded but has been left in this untouched original condition to show the authenticity of the dial. In addition the movement plate is engraved 'SER' for South Eastern Railway (SER) which was a railway company in south-eastern England from 1836 until 1922. The Transport Act passed on 6th August 1947 nationalising the railways became effective on 1st January 1948. On that date the Southern Railway, the Kent and East Sussex Railway, the North Devon and Cornwall Light Railway, the West London Extension Railway and the Weymouth and Portland Railway formed the British Railways Southern Region, commonly abbreviated to BR(S). We understand that the SE on the dial indicates an ex-SER / London Chatham & Dover or South Eastern & Chatham Railway Clock. The movement itself is excellent being a single chain fusee movement, which is nice and clean. The clock is in good working order and is happily ticking away. The clock comes complete with it's winding key and pendulum.
