10c - Arms of Corsica

This stamp is part of a set of 18 stamps that were issued for use in France and overprinted "Algerie," for everyday postage in Algeria. Corsica is a mountainous Mediterranean island that has been part of France since 1768.  This lovely stamp shows the Coat of Arms of Corsica which is an adaptation of the traditional flag of the island.

Algeria is a sovereign state in North Africa. It opened its first post office in 1849 issuing stamps from France,   as the  French administered the whole Mediterranean region of Algeria as an integral part of its nation until Algeria gained independence in 1962. As a result Algerian stamps had the initials, "RF" printed on them to reflect this.  In 1926 Algérie Postes, the state owned company responsible for the postal service in Algeria took over stamp production, the RF was removed and all stamps were inscribed, " Postes Algérie,"  After independence in 1962 stamps are inscribed  "Algerie."
