Really attractive 8 Day Longcase clock. Oak with mahogany banding by well known Devon maker Jerom Murch of Honiton c.1775. Here is an opportunity to buy an 11" Brass Dial clock with silvered chapter ring, in a typical Devon style of slimmer and lower height to suit the regions houses of the time. Being only just over 6ft tall it is very attractive in modern or older properties. This is a chance to buy an 8 Day longcase for the price of a 30 Hour clock . The well known and highly respected dealer Allan Smith, had one by the same maker for sale at £4,750! Full details as follows:
  • The maker Jerom Murch (Note: spellings vary, sometimes with an "e" on the end and as here "Jerum"), He is listed in Brian Loomes "Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World" as working in Honiton from 1763 until his death in 1802 . Clive Ponsford in "Devon Clocks and Clockmakers" records much detail about the Murch family of clockmakers in and around Honiton. He notes: "John Skinner was apprenticed to him c.1763, premium £6 16s 6d. He was buried at Honiton on 6 September 1802 (Parish Register)". He specialised in longcase clocks, including a 30 Hour brass-dial example (Loomes).
  • The 11" dial has particularly fine engraving and a silvered chapter ring in very good condition. The dial features the curved date apperture typical of the period, indeed it could suggest the clock is slightly earlier than stated. The use of the string of pearl Spandrels accurately dates the clock to 1760-1785 (Loomes). Overall a very attractive dial.
  • Regarding engraving and spellings, John Robey in "The Longcase Clock Reference Book" points out: "The other major work on a clock not always done by the clockmaker himself was the engraving of the dial and chapter ring. Apart from the artistic ability needed, this is quite a different skill to that required for the "engineering" aspect of building a clock movement. Anyone who has tried their hand at engraving will know that constant practice is required to achieve even passable results, and the chance of the graver slipping and ruining the work is ever present. One has only to look at a good quality piece of clock dial engraving to realise that this was often beyond the capabilities of many clockmakers of average skill, even though they may have been taught engraving as part of their appreticeship". This is a high quality engraved dial and it also explains the misspelling of the name, this occured remarkably frequently in the eighteenth century.
  • The movement is well made of heavy brass plating and well formed pillars (see pictures). Has been recently serviced and runs with a strong beat.
  • The case has been beeswax polished and is of an attractive oak with good patina , and mahogany banding. The hood has had some modification in the past 100 years, it has old wavy glass, and unusually opens from the right side. Possibly converted from a rising hood.
  • The clock's dimensions are: Height 72.75 ins (185cm), Max Width 18ins (46cm), Depth 9.5ins (24cm), Trunk width 11.5ins (29cm).
  • An interesting addition is an original signed and sealed extract of a document by Jerom Murch , this is taped to the inside of the trunk door. It is not a sale document but shows his original signature and is a most unusual addition to the history of the clock It is dated 20th May 1791, after the clock was made and some 11 years before his death.
