Max-Dry Moisture Control System - A Desiccant (Silica Gel) Cartridge System For Bagpipes

Introduction

The Max-Dry moisture control system has been developed to make the piper’s life easier.  This is an effective and user-friendly moisture control system for mouth-blown bagpipes having access to the inside of the bag (e.g. by means of a zipper).   This re-generable, silica gel-based, system should keep your reeds dry and in good working order.  

Benefits

The key benefits of the Max-Dry cartridge-based moisture control system are as follows:

·         A relatively inexpensive, yet effective system that allows extended playing time without water-logged reeds spoiling the performance.

·         Simple and easy to install in all bagpipe bags with internal (zipper) access.  The system avoids the need to pour off excess water (saliva) from water traps in public view.

·         A single connection to the blowpipe stock is all that is required to install its.   If  required, a smaller diameter (5/8" /  16mm) connector is available upon request for McCallum and other smaller bore stocks.

·         Light and unobtrusive in the bag – you won’t notice it there.

·         Very low airflow resistance that doesn’t require high blowing effort, or doesn’t adversely affect starting and stopping.  The system also won't adversely affect/reduce drone or chanter tone/volume.

·         Regeneration of saturated beads is very easy - simply remove the cartridges from the canister and place directly in an oven for heating/drying (no decanting or refilling of beads is necessary).

·         Use of long-life desiccant beads that retain their effectiveness and can be regenerated many times.  This is not a "kitty litter" system and doesn't produce dust in the bag or on the reeds.

User Instructions

1. The system can be easily adjusted to suit wet or dry blowers by:

a.       Adjusting the number and arrangement of the cartridges in the canister (using a minimum of 1, up to a maximum  of 3), and/or

b.      Adjusting the level/position of the air tube in the canister

2.  Remaining cartridge life, before the need for regeneration (drying out), is indicated by the colour of the beads in the cartridges.  (Their colour will change from bright orange through to dark green as they become more and more saturated.) 

3.   If saturated, the cartridges are easily removed/replaced by unzipping the bag and opening the system canister.

4.  Saturated cartridges can be replaced with fresh spares in a few seconds.  This may easily be done (if necessary) in the field, as spare cartridges are easily carried in a pocket or sporran.

5.  Heating the cartridges will allow the beads to dry out (to regenerate) and to be reused many times over.   The three cartridges supplied with the system may be all that you will need, although additional cartridges may also be obtained, if required. 

6.  During regeneration, cartridge beads don't need to be emptied into a separate container for drying.  Instead, the cartridges containing the beads are simply removed from the canister and placed in a conventional or microwave oven - on paper kitchen towel - to dry out. 

7.  After each extended playing session, and to dry out any moisture, it is generally recommended to remove the drones and reeds, to open the zip on the bag and, if necessary, to remove the cartridges for regeneration.  However, for shorter playing sessions and/or if the cartridges are not fully saturated, it may not be necessary to remove them as they will continue to work until they are fully saturated (coloured dark green).  

8.  All parts of the system can be easily removed from the bag for cleaning / hygiene reasons.

9. A few sheets of folded kitchen towel are placed around the inside of the canister (around the cartridges) to soak up any accumulated water droplets. When the towel becomes wet, it can be hygienically removed, discarded and replaced.
