Double Bass Bow Stamped and in our opinion 'By'Andre Vigneron Fils Lucian Capet model 144.54g  616mm  Solid 18ct gold brings weight and balance to this extraordinary bow.  Fittings weigh over 20 grams of 18ct gold. It has a good wide spread of hair  This actual bow is without doubt one of the finest bass bows on the planet!!  Designed and built almost exclusively for demonstrating the virtuous Dragonneti Concerto in A It was designed at the demands of virtuous bass players in the Paris Conservatoire who resented with a vengeance the new Voirin style bow extra long bow (740mm)which copied the proportions of a violin bow only more cumbersome. According to the records the Conservatoire masters, were up in arms at being subjected to lots of bump and no grind They turned to Vigneron with his new Lucian Capet design to solve the problem In truth the 'powers that be', conceded that the Capet model simply performed better on the bass bow than it did on the violin and cello bow. Which any PhD Physics/Acoustics will tell you is rubbish.  In truth Vignerons triangular neck was as significant to bow architecture as the flying buttress was to  buildings.  The old guard of Tourte copyists simply did not feel it provident to give their competitor credit for his improvement. Do not forget that Capet was a violiist not a luthier/archetier and "Capet's" patented design was for a stronger stock/handle which was good for bass bows yet certainly not as good as the Vuillaume half round or Hill type chanelled stock.  It was Vignerons triangle neck which definitely should have become the design which every maker agreed upon. Better by design. Performance improvement. I am certain it was simply better all round, yet Vigneron was subjected to negative press  emanating from his entrenched hierachical competition hell  bent on Tourte copies Of course if they had come up with the idea it would have been great. Such is the nature of the beast. Patented Stock/handle end design (looks like an old style wagon from the back) )developed and patented with famous violinist Lucian Capet,  Vigneron developed the throat end by cutting the triangular neck. It was his outstanding and innovative bass bows, for which he achieved highest acclaim. Many 'innovations' in the bow making world are somewhat scoffed at and fall by the wayside, not so with the Vigneron bass bow.  These bows rarely come up for sale and are considered the ultimate achievement and the highly desirable goal, both then and now, for the few who could afford to own one.  Think carefully now about how much strength and directional security a triangular neck offers when it comes to two massively significant factors. Factor one is X axis strength.  Factor Two is y axis lateral strength avoiding misshaping bending in the centre of the bow and the head twisting. Better by design. By an awfully long chalk. The small ensemble players and even the rare soloists of the day demanded higher quality wood and shorter bows from Vigneron and this bow model is what made him the true legend. The bass bow is where the Vigneron Capet partnership shone brightest.  Solid 18ct gold fitted bass bow stamped "A Vigneron A Paris" clearly Andre fils not Andre Pere for numerous stylistic reasons mentioned already. This is tree central core old growth of ebony hardness wood though notoriously hard and hard to find useful sections, such stuff of legend.  His use of this central ebony hard core wood is carefully documented, there is simply not enough usable wood of this quality to build an industry upon so the next layer of red dye wood was used for the most part.  The ebony of the rear button seems to be authentic and the threaded pin has been replaced. The replacement pin is blued steel Ie hardened not soft mild steel of very high quality. Heavy dense and powerful example of rich central core Pernumbucco Ironwood ie ebony type centre of trunk core wood par excellence the best of the best .  This is a soloist, small ensemble bow intended for virtuoso performance quick attaca and plenty of power through the very dense tensile wood. This is hugely accentuated by the heavy head and thick 18ct gold face. Its powerful strength make up easily for its short agile stature. In the hand you will literally have never felt or played anything like it.  Both F X Tourte and Lupot produced metal faced bows yet they charged a huge premium for the privilege.  Hill and Sons copied this idea and yet considered it routinely important and nearly all their bows were produced in this way.  By comparison only an elite few of the French makers bows were adorned in this way, so this would be considered an exhibition bow for a special customer.  For UK customers this high value bow  We can post free via Special Delivery fully insured We much prefer cash on delivery/collection since we lose 4% to Paypal Due to the high gold bullion content International customers are invited to  Accept the uninsured postage liability.
