Title of the map:
"LA CARTE DE TENDRE EN 1869"
Satyrical and pictorial antique map named "Carte du tendre", by Paul HADOL. Signature of the artist at lower left just outside border line.
This map is a critic of the Parisian society in the final years of Napoleon III's second Empire in France.
Paul Hadol has made a parody of the map of Tendre published in "La Clelie" , a galant historical novel by Mlle de Scudery in 1656. In this "topographical and allegorical representation", we find traced, in the form of villages and paths, the different stages of the love life according to the Precious of the time.
Hadol follows the same design, with a central river dissecting the image. In the original map of De Scudery, threre is the River of Inclination, here is the River of Discovery (reconnaisance), along whose course sail two boats, one lower centre with a sail labelled Lettres de Change, a second top centre labelled Mont de Piété, suggesting the possibility of personal religious and moral adjustment. Hadol folows the form of two tributary rivers in the upper left and right of the map. In Scudery's map the name is Rivers of Recognizance and Esteem; here, the Absinthe River and the Pactole. Like Scudery's map, the waters into which the 3 rivers flow at the top of the image are named the Dangerous sea; we can see also Ile de Bonne Femme (Good wife island). The territories are described as tendresse, petits soins, billets doux, etc..
Paul Hadol (1835-1875) was a French caricaturist and illustrator, he worked for a number of satyrical magazines in the fifteen years before the Franco-Prussian war, including Le Charivari, La Vie Parisienne, l'Eclipse and Le Journal Amusant.
