Notes:

Uxentum (Ugento) was an ancient seaside town of Calabria Italy with a small harbour on the Gulf of Taranto of the Ionian Sea. The town was originally part of the Salentini tribe in Calabria situated near the extreme west end of the heel of Italy ( known as the Iapygian promontory). The city is claimed to have been founded by Uxens, who is mentioned in the Eighth Book of the Aeneid. The town is however not widely mentioned in historical text.

Coinage

No coins are known to have been struck in Uxentum before the Roman period. Those that are known are all of bronze and usually bear marks of value which, when the weights are also taken into account, show that they follow the semuncial system, dating therefore from circ. B.C. 89.

Calabria

In the district called by the Greeks Messapia and Iapygia, and by the Romans Calabria, the only town which presented us with a continuous series of coins, extending from the earliest period down to its final capture by the Romans is the populous and wealthy city of Tarentum. The other and less common towns only began to coin money at a later date after Roman rule.
