ART DECO CHRISTOFLE
HOTELWARE POT À LAIT
HOT WATER POT FOR ONE
This is a fantastic period Art Deco silver
plated lidded hot water pot or perhaps
Cafe au Lait for one used in a posh
Hotel or restaurant by one of the
most famous French silver makers
CHRISTOFLE
c.1930
This is certainly a rare smaller item
as after a fairly exhaustive internet
search I can’t find another lidded
small pot like this one by Christofle
anywhere – the closest item and
the only item of a similar design
and the same era is a larger coffee
pot, that’s it there’s nothing else.
There are a number of Christofle
milk jugs in various designs about
this size but not lidded and only
one had this same unique shaped
handle which had the name of
Le Grand Hôtel Knocke engraved
on one side.
Thankfully this one has no such
personalization.
Christofle’s Albi design has a coffee
pot with this same sort of ‘bird beak’
spout rather than the long traditional
spout so this could be a coffee pot
for one used in a posh hotel
on a breakfast tray perhaps?
Otherwise I’m thinking hot water pot
but also only for one as they are
normally larger like the coffee or
teapots.
It is excellent quality and heavy for
its size.
The underside of the creamer is
stamped with the Christofle maker's
mark and silver plate stamps for
pre 1935 so it is not only Art Deco
in design but actually contemporary
to this period in time.
It has been well used which is another reason
I think it came from commercial premises
(used but not abused – see under Condition
for full details).
It’s an elegant useful item that comes
from one of the best silver makers
CHRISTOFLE.
CONDITION
In reasonably good antique/vintage
condition with some signs of age and use.
No big dents but a few little dings scattered
around body and lid.
Lots of little overall surface marks which
you should be able to see in the photos.
The foot rim has a short flattened area,
not obvious but must be pointed out –
see close-up photos.
The silver plating is only worn around
the edge of the knob on the lid
(see photos) but nowhere else
which makes sense if it was
used in a hotel.
The silver plated finish is slightly ‘uneven’
in its shininess – hard to describe
but not worn just a little patchy -
a light buffing might help with this.
The patina is still nice though and looks
‘soft’ rather than new looking.
DIMENSIONS
It measures approximately:
13cm (5 1/8") high
14cm (5 ½ ")
spout to handle
Weight is: 361.3 grams
