The Coleman’s Mustard Club arose from a novel and ingenious form of marketing on behalf of J & J Coleman Ltd who launched their poster campaign in 1926. The campaign initially involved a series of promotional teasers based on the strapline “Has Father joined the Mustard Club?” The clever thing was, at this stage there was no Mustard Club and the idea inferred was that anyone who used Coleman’s mustard were automatically associate members. The marketing campaign caught the public’s imagination and Coleman’s took the concept further when they established their Mustard Club in 1926. The club took off and quickly developed a life of its own with many spin-offs such as Coleman Mustard promotionals, cook books, games and other merchandise. The Coleman’s Mustard Club also proved very popular in Australia under the brand name of Keen’s mustard. Keen Robinson & Company Ltd were a long-established manufacturer of mustard and bought over by Coleman’s in 1903. People could apply to join the Mustard Club by completing the coupon and sending 6d (6 pence) for return postage. The club pack could include a recipe booklet, other literature and always the MMC badge. When the club was wound up in 1933 over 500,000 MMC badges had been issued and are still commonly available today. The badges were made with both pin and buttonhole fittings. Incidentally, the well-known illustrator John Gilroy (1898-1985) was the main artist who worked on the 1926 Coleman Mustard Club advertising campaign. In 1925 he joined the S H Benson, the creative agency who devised the marketing campaign that later included the Coleman Mustard Club. It is probable that John also designed the MMC badge.
