How to select a winch?   1.Vehicle Weight- More specifically, know your gross vehicle weight rating. Thegeneral wisdomin the truck and Jeep community is that you multiply your vehicle weight by 1.5 to get your minimum pull rating capacity.    2.Voltage -The winch's voltge is 12V or 24V.Usually,lots of winches are 12V.    3.Motor type - Principally, there are three types of winch motors - permanent magnet (PM), series wound (SW) and hydraulic motor.If you don't usually go driving on tough trails, a PM powered winch is adequate for your requirements.    Before you purchase the winch, you can refer to the form information.

Myths

"You don't need to wear gloves with synthetic rope." Gloves should be used for both. While a synthetic rope won't develop barbs, it can trap debris which can cut you.

"Synthetic rope won't whip back if it breaks." Both will whip back after breaking. The heavier steel stores more kinetic  energy, so it can cause more damage, but synthetic does not just break  and fall to the ground. A winch line weight should be used on both.

"Steel cable kinks too easily." Steel does not kink by itself -- that is operator error. The same goes for  cable or rope pulling in between wraps. Properly wrapped and aligned,  neither kind should be an issue.
