They got a major breakthrough in Sweden in 1982 by winning the televised competition "Rock-SM" (Swedish Rock Championships): it was the first time this competition was held, and Europe became a larger success than the competition itself. Since their formation, Europe has released eleven studio albums, three live albums, three compilations and twenty-three music videos. Europe rose to international fame in the 1980s with their third album, 1986's The Final Countdown, which has sold over 3 million copies in the United States and 15 million copies worldwide (including album and single). Europe have sold over 25 million records worldwide.[5] The band has had two top 20 albums on the Billboard 200 chart (The Final Countdown and Out of This World)[6] and two top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart ("The Final Countdown" and "Carrie").[7] Europe went on hiatus in 1992, reunited temporarily for a one-off performance in Stockholm on New Year's Eve 1999 and announced an official reunion in 2003. Since then the band has released six albums, Start from the Dark (2004), Secret Society (2006), Last Look at Eden (2009), Bag of Bones (2012), War of Kings (2015) and Walk the Earth (2017). Europe has achieved new attention in the US due to being featured in a GEICO Insurance cable television commercial campaign viewed for many months across the US in 2015-16. The band is mainly influenced by Whitesnake, Deep Purple, Rainbow, Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy, UFO and Michael Schenker Group.[8][9] History Europe and Wings of Tomorrow (1979–1984) The first incarnation of the band was named Force and came together in 1979, in Upplands Väsby, Stockholm, and was integrated by vocalist Joey Tempest, guitarist John Norum, bass guitarist Peter Olsson, and drummer Tony Reno.[10] "I remember when we started the band Force we were playing covers in the rehearsal room, because we just wanted to learn our instruments, like all bands," Tempest said, "Then one day I said maybe we should do our own stuff. Nobody had any ideas, so I brought mine into the rehearsal room, and that is when we started writing our own stuff."[11] The band sent several demos to record companies, but were told that in order to be published they had to cut their hair and sing in Swedish. Two years later, Olsson left the band and was replaced by John Levén.[10] Just a couple of months later, Levén joined Yngwie Malmsteen's band Rising Force, and Malmsteen's former bassist, Marcel Jacob, joined Force. This only lasted for three months, though; Levén apparently had issues with Malmsteen, so he and Jacob traded places again.[12] In 1982, Tempest's girlfriend entered Force in the Swedish rock talent contest Rock-SM. Competing against 4000 bands, they won the contest thanks to two songs, "In the Future to Come" and "The King Will Return". The reward was a record deal with Hot Records. Tempest won the individual award for Best Lead Singer, and Norum won the award for Best Guitarist.[10] Just before the contest, Force changed their name to Europe. Tempest came up with the name.[13][13] The self-titled debut album was released the following year, and sold well both in Sweden and Japan. The album charted at number 8 in the band's home country and the single "Seven Doors Hotel" became a Top 10 hit in Japan.[10] The second album Wings of Tomorrow was released one year later and the single "Open Your Heart" got interest from CBS Records who offered them an international contract in 1985.[10] "I think one of the most important albums for the band was Wings of Tomorrow," Tempest said, "We were learning how to write songs and John started playing some really cool stuff on the guitar. We became a better band and that was a good period for the band."[14] Keyboardist Mic Michaeli was soon recruited to play in live concerts, and became an official member of the band shortly after.[10] At the same time, Tony Reno was fired because of his lack of motivation and alleged slacking off on rehearsals. Bassist Peter Olsson also claims that Reno was replaced on the albums by a drum machine.[15] His replacement was Ian Haugland.[10] The Final Countdown (1985–1987) In 1985 Europe recorded the soundtrack for the film On the Loose, which gave them the hit "Rock the Night".[10] Several months later Joey Tempest was asked to write a song for the charity project Swedish Metal Aid.[16] He wrote "Give a Helping Hand", which would feature the biggest stars of Swedish rock and metal.[17] The income from the sales of the single, which was produced by Easy Action guitarist Kee Marcello, was donated to the starving people of Ethiopia.[10] In September 1985, Europe was approached by an executive from Epic Records. They helped Europe start the recording of its next album with Journey producer Kevin Elson. The result was The Final Countdown. Released on 26 May 1986, the album gave the band its international breakthrough, was certified Triple Platinum in the USA[18] and reached number 8 on the Billboard 200 chart.[6] The title track, which was based on a keyboard riff composed by Tempest as early as 1981-82,[10] was released as the first single and became a worldwide success, peaking at number 1 in 25 countries,[5] such as the UK,[19] France,[20] Spain, and Germany.[21] The power ballad "Carrie", which peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart,[7] "Cherokee" and a re-recorded "Rock the Night" were other hits from the album.[citation needed] Not satisfied with the album's keyboard-dominated production nor the band's commercialized image, John Norum decided to leave Europe in November 1986 to pursue a solo career.[10] "I didn't really like the direction the band was going in," Norum said, "We became this teeny-bopper, bubblegum band and I hated that whole image, the spandex, poodle-rock type of thing. I was more into the heavier, guitar-oriented stuff and it seemed like the keyboards were taking over more and more, and we were becoming more commercial. So I decided to leave. I just wanted to move on and do something else."[22] Kee Marcello was asked to replace him, and after some consideration, he decided to join the band.[10] Marcello joined the band at its commercial peak, no less than three singles from The Final Countdown reaching the US Top 40.[7] The following year included successful tours through Europe and the USA.[citation needed] Out of This World and Prisoners in Paradise (1988–1992) The follow-up to The Final Countdown was entitled Out of This World and was released in 1988. The biggest hit from the album was "Superstitious" which peaked at number 31 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 9 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks. "Superstitious" would be the last Europe song to chart in the USA.[7] The album was certified platinum in the States and peaked at number 19 on the Billboard 200 chart.[6][18] More touring followed, including an American tour with Def Leppard and a festival gig at the National Bowl in Milton Keynes, England with Bon Jovi, Skid Row and Vixen.[10] In September 1989, Europe did a gig at the Whisky a Go Go club in West Hollywood, California, under the pseudonym Le Baron Boys.[23] That name would later be used as a title for a much-circulated Europe bootleg, which contained demo recordings from 1989-90. Two years later, the album Prisoners in Paradise was released, but received limited media attention due to the "boom" of the grunge movement, started by Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains and Pearl Jam. Although the sales were low compared to previous albums, the single "I'll Cry for You" managed to hit number 28 on the UK charts.[19] On New Year's Eve 1991, Europe kicked off a new tour with a show at the Tokyo Dome, in which Tesla, Thunder and Metallica also performed. The show was called "Final Countdown '91".[10][24] After ten years of living, recording, and touring together, Europe decided to take a break at the end of the 1992 tour.[10] "I remember in the tour bus afterwards we were talking about where the whole thing was going and I think at the time the consensus of the band was we really felt ready for a break," Tempest said, "We felt that it was time to put some roots down and I was really into the idea of making my own solo album."[25] In that time, Tempest, Norum and Marcello released solo albums whilst the other members participated in several different projects and bands. In return, Europe was dropped from Epic Records.[citation needed] Reunion and Start from the Dark (2003–2005) The band members started to discuss the possibility of a Europe reunion in 1998.[25] "Mic and Ian came over to see me in Ireland," Tempest said, "Then whilst we were there, John Norum called from LA, and we were like 'Yes, maybe now is the right time to get things started again'."[25] For the 2000 millennium celebrations, Europe was asked to do a concert in Stockholm on New Year's Eve 1999. That would be Europe's first and, to date, only concert with both of their lead guitarists, since both John Norum and Kee Marcello had accepted the offer to play that evening with the rest of the group. They played "Rock the Night" and "The Final Countdown".[25][26] Over the years, there were several reunion rumors, and on 2 October 2003 it was made official: Europe announced plans for a new album and world tour.[27] The band then switched back to the Final Countdown line-up, with John Norum as the only lead guitarist.[25] "There was no doubt that we wanted John back, and John wanted to get back," Tempest said, "For me it was important to get that spark going again that we had before."[11] Kee Marcello claimed that he was too busy with his own projects. "I told them I didn't want to participate in a [new] studio album because musically, I want to go in a different kind of direction than the music Europe stands for," Marcello said, "Then we talked for a while about doing a six-piece tour – it didn't turn out that way because of different reasons."[26] The songwriting for a new album, Start from the Dark, began early in 2003.[25] "It was just a matter of moving forward and writing songs for the new album," Tempest said, "That was always our intention. We thought that if we were gonna make a comeback, we wanted to do it properly, and that meant we wanted to write and record some new songs, a new album."[25] For the recording of Start from the Dark, the band decided to work with producer Kevin Elson, who had also produced The Final Countdown.[25] "We could either go with a younger producer, or we could go with someone that we knew, someone experienced who is on the same wavelength as the band," Tempest said, "So in the end we decided that Kevin would be the perfect choice."[25] In the summer of 2004, Europe went on a festival tour through the European continent.[25] The concert setlists included the old hits, but also introduced the title track from Start from the Dark.[25] The album was released on 22 September 2004, the same day that John Norum became a father. Start from the Dark featured a more modern sound compared to Europe's previous albums. "We wanted to be doing something at least that was a little bit relevant now; bit of a dry mix, detuned a bit," Tempest said, "So we felt like we didn't want to do an 1980s album per se, we just wanted to start like a fresh band really."[28] Eventually, the album sold in excess of 600,000 copies worldwide.[11] Secret Society and Last Look at Eden (2006–2010) Europe released its seventh album, Secret Society on 26 October 2006. "We think it's one of the strongest albums that Europe has ever done," Tempest said, "There is definitely some more melodic stuff on this one. Start from the Dark was very raw and made a statement, which is cool but for us it felt like a debut album in a way, so we wanted to branch out a bit on this one and take it to new levels."[11] On 26 January 2008, Europe did a semi-acoustic live concert at Nalen in Stockholm, calling the event Almost Unplugged. The band was accompanied by a string quartet and played reworked versions of its own songs, as well as cover versions of songs by bands that have influenced Europe's sound throughout the years – Pink Floyd, UFO, Led Zeppelin and Thin Lizzy. The show was broadcast live over the Internet on Europe's official website.[29] It was released on CD on 17 September 2008[30] and on DVD on 19 August 2009.[citation needed] On 23 July 2008, Europe did a co-headlining concert with Whitesnake in Padua, Italy. During Whitesnake's performance of their encore "Still of the Night", Joey Tempest joined David Coverdale on stage for the last chorus.[31] In August 2008 Europe was the opening act for Deep Purple for two concerts in Sweden, in Linköping on 8 August and Ystad on 9 August.[32] John Norum joined Deep Purple on stage in Ystad for a performance of "Smoke on the Water".[33] On 21 July 2009, bass guitarist and former member of Force, Marcel Jacob, committed suicide. He was 45 years old.[34] Europe's eighth studio album, Last Look at Eden, was released on 9 September 2009.[35] The title track was released as a single in June.[36] The band has described it as a modern retro rock album.[37] "This time, we're taking some new directions with our songs, and we're exploring different styles," they stated, "There is a definite classic rock vibe on some of the tracks... a tip of the hat to groovin', funkin' 1970s rock songs - but ones we have bought into the here and now."[38] The second single, "New Love in Town", was released as a digital download on 3 September 2009.[39] Bag of Bones and War of Kings (2011–2016) On 6 August 2011, Europe headlined the closing ceremonies of the 22nd World Scout Jamboree in Rinkaby, Sweden before an audience of 40,061 Scouts and Guides which included King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and Queen Silvia of Sweden. [40] On 12 July 2011, Europe confirmed that Kevin Shirley would produce their ninth studio album. The recording sessions started on 3 October 2011.[41][42] On 24 January 2012 the band announced the album title, Bag of Bones.[43][44] The album was released on 18 April 2012 in Japan by Victor Entertainment[45] and on 25 April in Sweden by Gain Music Entertainment.[46] "Bag of Bones" debuted at number 2 on the Swedish album chart on 4 May 2012[12] and was certified Gold in Sweden on 12 July 2012.[12][citation needed] The band played at the Sweden Rock Festival in 2013, with their performance recorded for a 30th anniversary double CD, DVD and blu-ray disc, which was released in October 2013.[47][48][49] In 2014, Europe celebrated the 30th anniversary of their second studio album "Wings Of Tomorrow". They performed the entire "Wings Of Tomorrow" album on several shows.[citation needed] Europe's tenth studio album, War of Kings was released on 2 March 2015 by UDR Records.[50] It was produced by Dave Cobb, producer for bands such as Rival Sons.[50] This was followed in March 2015 by a 14-date tour of the UK co-headlining with Black Star Riders, supported by The Amorettes.[51] Europe participated in a major cable television GEICO advertising campaign which started airing September 2015 in the US; they were featured singing "The Final Countdown" to a microwave oven cooking a burrito in a television commercial.[52] Europe released the War Of Kings Special Edition together with Live Performance From Wacken Open Air Festival which was performed on 29 July 2015. The digital version was released on 27 November 2015 by UDR Records and the Blu Ray & DVD version released in early 2016.[citation needed] In November 2016, Europe announced the 30th Final Countdown Anniversary Tour to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their top selling album "The Final Countdown". In this tour, they performed the entire "The Final Countdown" album and the entire "War Of Kings" album in every concert. They also filmed the concert performed in Roundhouse, London on 12 November 2016 and released it on 21 July 2017 via Blu Ray, DVD & iTunes Digital Download.[citation needed] Walk the Earth (2017–present) In mid-2017, Europe announced their eleventh studio album, titled Walk the Earth. The album was released on 20 October via CD with bonus DVD and digital download.[citation needed] Band members Current members John Norum - guitars, backing vocals (1979–1986, 1999, 2003–present) Joey Tempest - lead vocals, occasional guitars, keyboards and piano (1979–1992, 1999, 2003–present) John Levén - bass, backing vocals (1981–1992, 1999, 2003–present) Mic Michaeli - keyboards, piano, keytar, backing vocals, occasional guitars (1984–1992, 1999, 2003–present) Ian Haugland - drums, percussion, snare drum, backing vocals (1984–1992, 1999, 2003–present) Former members Peter Olsson - bass, backing vocals (Force, 1979–1981) Tony Reno - drums, percussion (1979–1984) Marcel Jacob - bass, backing vocals (1981, died 2009) Kee Marcello - guitars, backing vocals (1986–1992, 1999) Awards 1986  Europe  Rockbjörnen (Sweden) – Best Swedish Group[53]  Won  Gold Bravo Otto (Germany) – Hard 'n Heavy[54]  Won  1987  Gold Bravo Otto (Germany) – Hard 'n Heavy[55]  Won  1988  Gold Bravo Otto (Germany) – Hard 'n Heavy[56]  Won  1989  Silver Bravo Otto (Germany) – Bands Hard 'n Heavy[57]  Won  1990  Bronze Bravo Otto (Germany) – Bands Hard 'n Heavy[58]  Won  2015  Rockbjörnen (Sweden) – Best Hard Rock/Metal[53]  Won  Classic Rock Roll of Honour (UK) – Comeback of the Year[59]  Won  2018  Walk the Earth  Grammis (Sweden) – Best Hard Rock/Metal[60]  Won  Europe  Swedish Music Hall of Fame[61]  Inducted  Discography Studio albums Europe (1983) Wings of Tomorrow (1984) The Final Countdown (1986) Out of This World (1988) Prisoners in Paradise (1991) Start from the Dark (2004) Secret Society (2006) Last Look at Eden (2009) Bag of Bones (2012) War of Kings (2015) Walk the Earth (2017) See also List of glam metal bands and artists The following is a list of glam metal bands and artists and includes bands and artists that have been described as glam metal or its interchangeable terms, hair metal,[1][2] hair bands,[3] pop metal[1] and lite metal[1] by professional journalists at some stage in their career. In their first incarnation, the Swedish band was called Force. Featuring core members Joey Tempest (vocals), John Norum (guitar), Tony Reno (drums), and John Leven (bass) -- the band won a national talent contest in the early '80s, which led to a record contract. After changing their name to Europe and releasing two albums in Sweden (Europe and Wings of Tomorrow), the band landed an international deal with Epic Records. By this time, Reno had left the group and been replaced by Ian Haugland. Keyboardist Mic Michaeli had also joined the lineup. The Final Countdown  In 1986, Europe released The Final Countdown. On the album, Michaeli's keyboards take a prominent role (they provide the main riff in the hit title track), which nicely complemented the band's smoother pop melodies. The change in style proved successful, as the record became a Top Ten hit in the U.S. and U.K.; both "The Final Countdown" and "Carrie" became Top Ten singles as well. Norum left the band by the end of the year and was replaced by Kee Marcello. Released in 1988, Out of This World continued the formula of the previous record. It was also a success, although its numbers didn't match those of The Final Countdown. Three years later, Europe released their fifth studio album, Prisoners in Paradise, which featured the hit title track as well as the midtempo ballad "I'll Cry for You," before calling it quits the following year. The band, including Norum, reunited for a New Year's Eve performance in Stockholm in 1999, resulting in the announcement of an official reunion three years later. The band subsequently recorded and released their sixth album, Start from the Dark (2004), then followed it with Secret Society (2006) and Last Look at Eden (2009), the latter of which debuted at number one on the Swedish album chart. Bag of Bones (2012) had a blues-rock feel, while War of Kings (2015) was a heavy, doomy, faintly psychedelic affair strongly inspired by their childhood heroes Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Led Zeppelin. Walk the Earth  After embarking on a 30th anniversary tour, dubbed The Final Countdown, the Swedish rockers returned in 2017 with a brand new album. Walk the Earth was produced by Dave Cobb (Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell, Dolly Parton) and recorded at London's Abbey Road Studios. JOEY TEMPEST Birth name Rolf Magnus Joakim Larsson Born 19 August 1963 Stockholm, Sweden Genres Heavy metal, hard rock, glam metal, country rock Instruments Vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass, piano, violin Years active 1979–present Labels Polar, Polydor, Sonet Associated acts Europe Rolf Magnus Joakim Larsson (born 19 August 1963), professionally known as Joey Tempest, is a Swedish singer, best known as the lead singer and main songwriter of the rock band Europe. He has written hits which include "The Final Countdown", "Rock the Night", "Cherokee" and "Superstitious". Early life Before becoming the artist Joey Tempest, Joakim Larsson learned how to play the piano and the guitar. He played football, ice hockey and competed in go-cart racing; he once came in fourth place in the Junior Cart Race, a Swedish championship. Like many of the other Europe members, he grew up in Stockholm suburb Upplands Väsby. His biggest idols were Thin Lizzy and Led Zeppelin.[citation needed] During his teens, he played in a number of bands such as Jet, Blazer, Made in Hong Kong and Roxanne. At that time he alternated between playing rhythm guitar and bass, in addition to lead vocals. Career In 1979, Tempest formed the band Force with guitarist John Norum, bass guitarist Peter Olsson and drummer Tony Reno.[1] Force immediately began building a reputation and a fanbase in the suburbs of Stockholm. In 1982, they changed their name to Europe and won the music competition Rock-SM. The first prize was a record deal with Hot Records.[1] Europe released five albums between 1983 and 1991, with Joey Tempest as the lead singer, frontman, and songwriter. "The Final Countdown" During the years with Europe, Tempest wrote numerous international big hits. "The Final Countdown" was the biggest; it topped the sales chart in 26 countries, sold 15 million copies, was played at the closing ceremony of the 1987 EuroBasket and 1988 Summer Olympics, became the musical theme of the millennium celebrations and a ringtone in hundreds of thousands of mobile phones all over the world.[citation needed] After Countdown, Europe released two more albums, Out of this World (1988), and Prisoners in Paradise (1991), before their final concert in March 1992. Europe ended their final tour in Portsmouth and did not perform together again until New Year's Eve 1999 to 2000. Solo work In 1995, Tempest's solo debut A Place to Call Home was released. He has called it his "singer/songwriter album". The album, which was produced by Dan Sundquist, was recorded in Stockholm and London using Swedish musicians. Europe band mate John Norum guests on one of the tracks. Tempest also played guitar on the album. A Place to Call Home sold platinum in Sweden and it was a big success internationally. Later the same year he commenced his first European tour as a solo artist. The following year he was nominated for a "Best Swedish Artist" Grammy. Four singles were taken from the album, "A Place to Call Home", "Under the Influence", "We Come Alive" and "Don't Go Changing On Me". The next album Azalea Place was released in 1997. The next solo album was recorded in Nashville by producer Richard Dodd, known for producing artists such as The Travelling Wilburys and Tom Petty. Where A Place To Call Home had Tempest writing all the material, the new album was written together with others. Among these were Chris Difford from Squeeze and Will Jennings. "Azalea Place was mostly written in the studio and was therefore more improvised and experimental", Tempest commented on the production.[citation needed] "The Match", "The One In The Glass" and "If I'd Only Known" were released as singles. "The Match" became one of the most played songs on Swedish radio and the album achieved gold status. In the autumn of 2002, he released his third solo album, Joey Tempest. The producer team behind the album was "DeadMono", consisting of Malcolm Pardon and Fredrik Rinman. The team has also worked with Eskobar, Lisa Miskovsky and Stakka Bo. Also collaborating on the album were Chris Difford, former Europe member Mic Michaeli, and guitarist Adam Lamprell. The first session took place in Konk Studios, The Kinks old London studio, where Tempest jammed with English musicians who had formerly played with Massive Attack. This session produced "Magnificent", "Kill For A Girl Like You" (B-side of the first single "Forgiven") and "Sometimes". Work continued in Stockholm, this time with Swedish musicians, including Mic Michaeli. "Superhuman" originated from this session. After that, Tempest kept on working with Adam Lamprell in a temporary studio in London. Of his song writing Tempest has said, "Dreamless and Magnificent have a lot of London in them. Losers is influenced by both London and Dublin. Living there can be very intense, almost chaotic. They’re tough cities and I'd never have written the lyrics I did without living there.[citation needed]" Some lyrics can also be related to his homeland, reflections on living abroad, and learning to live with new people. Musician Tempest played the keyboards on the first two Europe albums before the band decided to recruit keyboardist Mic Michaeli in April 1984.[1] A couple of years earlier, Tempest had borrowed a keyboard from Michaeli and used it to compose the main keyboard hook of the song "The Final Countdown".[1] After a jam session in 1985, Michaeli and Tempest co-wrote the ballad "Carrie".[1] Later that year, Tempest wrote the soundtrack for the Swedish film On the Loose, as well as the song "Give A Helping Hand" for the benefit project Swedish Metal Aid, in the spirit of Band Aid.[2] The song was produced by future Europe bandmate Kee Marcello.[1] In 1986 Tempest wrote and produced the album One of a Kind for Tone Norum, John Norum's younger sister.[1] Tempest also collaborated with John Norum on the single "We Will Be Strong" from Norum's album Face the Truth in 1992. This was Tempest and Norum's first collaboration since Norum left Europe in November 1986.[1] After Europe went on hiatus in 1992, Tempest released three solo albums.[3] The first album, A Place to Call Home featured a guest appearance from John Norum on the song "Right to Respect". Several songs on the third album, Joey Tempest, were co-written by Mic Michaeli. 2004 saw the release of Europe's comeback album, Start from the Dark, featuring the band's classic Final Countdown line-up with John Norum on guitar. The follow-up, Secret Society, was released in 2006, Last Look at Eden in 2009, Bag of Bones in 2012, and War of Kings in 2015.Walk the Earth(album) in 2017 Personal life Tempest currently lives in London, England with his wife Lisa Worthington and sons James Joakim[4] and Jack Johnston[5] Larsson. Tempest talked to Bruce Dickinson about his decision to live in London on the latter's BBC 6 Music radio show in 2009.[6] He does not have any social media pages apart from the official ones for Europe listed on their website.[7] Asked in 2009, by the BBC's Liam Allen, "Are you ever embarrassed by some of the hairstyles and clothes you wore back in the day?", Tempest replied, "Not really, we were very young, we were MTV generation - we were one of the biggest bands on MTV. I just wanted to look like Robert Plant, to be honest."[8] Discography Solo albums A Place to Call Home (1995) Personnel Joey Tempest – Lead vocals, guitars Jonas Isacsson, Staffan Astner, Jesper Lindberg, John Norum – Guitars Dan Sundquist – Guitars, bass, piano Svante Henryson, Sven Lindvall – Bass Mats Asplen – Organ Nicci Wallin, Per Lindvall, Christer Jansson – Drums [2] Album credits[ Dan Sundqvist – Producer Alar Suuma – Mixing Pontus Olsson – Mixing on tracks 3, 7, engineer Nick Hopkins – Engineer Robert Wellerfors – Mastering Dan Håfström – Production assistant Joel Berg – Art direction John Scarisbrick – Photography Per Zennström – Photography Azalea Place (1997) Songwriters Chris Difford Steve Diamond, Richard Dodd Janet Zuckerman Kent Lavoie Will Jennings) Personnel Joey Tempest – Lead vocals, guitars, bass Siobhan Maher – Spanish vocals on "Revolution of Love" Reggie Young, Staffan Astner – Guitars Tony Harrell – Keyboards Greg Morrow, Tom Harding, Craig Crampf, Brian Barnett – Drums [2] Album credits Richard Dodd - Producer, engineer, arrangements Jack Grochmal - Engineer James Baur - Assisting engineer Dan Leffler - Engineer on "If I'd Only Known" Joey Tempest - Arrangements George Marino - Mastering Staffan Astner - Additional arrangements Kristin Wilkinson - Strings arrangements Martina Hoogland Ivanow - Photography Martin Renck - Cover design Joey Tempest (2002) Joey Tempest / Malcolm Pardon / Fredrik Rinman/ Adam Lamprell / Kajsa Ribbing/ Chris Difford/ Ribbing) 13."Kill For A Girl Like You [Bonus Track] 14."Kicking Around [Bonus Track] Personnel Joey Tempest – Lead vocals, guitars, bass Adam Lamprell – Guitars Malcolm Pardon – Guitars, bass Fredrik Rinman – Guitars, keyboards Jörgen Wall – Drums [1] Album credits DeadMono – Producer Ronny Lahti – Mixing, additional recordings Ted Jensen - Mastering WalseCustomDesign - Sleeve Peter Alendahl/Skarp - Photography b. Joakim Larsson, 19 August 1963, Stockholm, Sweden. Tempest made his name as the lead vocalist of heavy rock band Europe, his distinctive voice being internationally known from the success of ‘The Final Countdown’ in 1986. His self-titled debut was issued in 1995 and contained a selection of good-quality songs, most of which contained at least one melodic hook. Well-produced, well sung, well played - but it all added up to little. Tempest had taken a more mainstream pop direction that some of his followers found too retro. Tracks such as ‘We Come Alive’ and ‘Pleasure And Pain’ were instantly appealing, but had little aftertaste. Subsequent solo releases maintained this direction with 2002’s self-titled collection even leaning towards 80s electronic pop. In 2003, Tempest joined the reunited Europe for a world tour. He began recording a solo album with vocalist Goran Edman, drummer Peter Hermansson, and bassist Marcel Jacob; the result was 1987's Total Control. He recorded the live album Live in Stockholm the following year; collaborated with Don Dokken; and recorded a second studio album, Face the Truth, in 1992. JOHN LEVEN Birth name John Gunnar Levén Born 25 October 1963 (age 55) Stockholm, Sweden Genres Heavy metal, hard rock, glam metal Instruments Bass, vocals, guitar, piano, keyboard Years active 1981–present Associated acts Europe, Glenn Hughes, Brazen Abbot, Clockwise, Last Autumn's Dream John Gunnar Levén (born 25 October 1963 in Stockholm, Sweden) is a Swedish bassist in the Swedish rock band Europe. Levén and vocalist Joey Tempest are the only band members who have performed on all of Europe's studio albums. Career When Levén was 7 years old, he and his family moved to the suburb Upplands Väsby, where several members of Europe grew up. He joined the band in 1981, replacing Peter Olsson. In 1985 Levén was the one who suggested that Tempest should write a song based on an old keyboard riff that the vocalist had written around 1981-82. The result was the song "The Final Countdown". After Europe went on hiatus in 1992, Levén recorded and toured with bands like Brazen Abbot, Clockwise, Last Autumn's Dream, Southpaw, Europe colleague John Norum and former Black Sabbath / Deep Purple vocalist Glenn Hughes. Europe reunited in 2003, and Levén co-wrote the single "Always the Pretenders" from the 2006 album Secret Society, with Tempest. He also co-wrote the song "The Beast" on the 2009 album Last Look at Eden. Personal life Levén has three sons, Daniel, Alex and Adrian.[1][2] Discography Other artists Glenn Hughes - From Now On... TONY RENO Birth name Tony Niemistö Also known as Tony Lace Born 10 February 1963 (age 56) Danderyd, Sweden Genres Heavy metal Power metal Speed metal Instruments Drums Years active 1978–1992 Associated acts Europe, Geisha, =Y= Tony Niemistö (born 10 February 1963 in Danderyd, Stockholm County) is a semi-retired Swedish musician, best known as Tony Reno, the original drummer in the rock band Europe.[1] He played on Europe's first two albums, Europe and Wings of Tomorrow. He parted company from the band before the second leg of the Wings of Tomorrow tour in 1984. He was replaced by Ian Haugland. In 1986 Niemistö joined the sleaze rock band Geisha, replacing Mikkey Dee. Niemistö changed his stage name to Tony Lace, but eventually he went back to using his real name. Geisha released the album Phantasmagoria in 1987, before splitting up two years later. Geisha's vocalist Yenz Cheyenne then formed the band =Y=, which Niemistö joined. They released an EP, =Y= in 1991, and an album, Rawchild in 1992. Niemistö had not participated in anything related to Europe for 29 years. That activity drought ended in 2013, when the group was celebrating the 30th anniversary of the release of their original album. Niemistö autographed 30 copies of a canvas replica of the 1983 album's cover, and then later on took part in a 10-guitar auction (of which the proceeds from 'The Final Countdown' guitar benefitted the efforts of the 'Medicins Sans Frontiers' organization in the Philippines), where he autographed the guitar containing art of the debut album.[2] Niemistö is currently living in Vallentuna, Sweden,[3] where he works for a computer company. MARCEL JACOB Birth name Marcel Jacob Also known as Marre Born 30 January 1964 Stockholm, Sweden Died 21 July 2009 (aged 45) Kristineberg, Stockholm, Sweden Genres Heavy metal, hard rock Occupation(s) Musician, songwriter Instruments Bass, guitar, keyboards, drums Years active 1978–2009 Associated acts Talisman, Yngwie Malmsteen, Europe, Last Autumn's Dream Marcel Jacob (30 January 1964 – 21 July 2009) was a Swedish musician, best known as the bassist in the hard rock bands Talisman and Yngwie Malmsteen. For a brief period, Marcel also played with the band Europe. Biography In 1978, Jacob formed the band Rising Force together with guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen. Three years later Jacob joined the band Force, which later changed its name to Europe, replacing John Levén, who took Jacob's place in Rising Force. During his time in Force, Jacob wrote the song "Black Journey Through My Soul" together with vocalist Joey Tempest. The song was eventually included on Europe's second album Wings of Tomorrow, retitled "Scream of Anger". After spending three months in Force, Jacob traded places with John Levén again, who apparently had issues with Malmsteen. In 1985, Jacob returned to Malmsteen's band to play on the album Marching Out and parts of the following US tour. In 1987, Jacob played on the album Total Control, the first solo album released by Europe guitarist John Norum. Jacob also re-used demo tracks from his pre-Yngwie band Power for several of the songs included on that album. Two years later he formed the band Talisman together with vocalist Jeff Scott Soto. Throughout the years Talisman was Jacob's major effort and the band released several studio and live albums until 2007. In 1992, Jacob played on a song with Lion's Share, "Nothing's Free", which was included on a Belgian compilation and in 1993 he was guest musician on Thomas Vikström's solo album If I Could Fly. Vikström and Jacob had played together with guitar player Tommy Denander and drummer Jake Samuel (The Poodles) in the cover band Horny Strings. Later Vikström (Therion) took the lead singer role. The same year Jacob was guest musician on the album Something Wicked Comes by Billionaires Boys Club. In 1994, he played on The Johansson Brothers' self-titled album. Another band Jacob formed was Human Clay, together with Jeff Scott Soto. They recorded two albums. In 1996, Jacob played on Inspiration, a cover album recorded by Yngwie J. Malmsteen. In the early 2000s, Jacob studied psychology at Stockholm University for a few years. In 2005 Jacob was one of three new players to participate in the Swedish/German hard rock band Last Autumn's Dream for its second studio album, along with drummer Jamie Borger and keyboarder Thomas Lassar. They were hired to replace John Levén, Ian Haugland and Mic Michaeli, who played on the debut album. Who could not make it this time due to take part in the Europe reunion. Jacob also recorded Last Autumn's Dream five further studio albums, the latest being Dreamcatcher, which was released on 26 January 2009. Jacob made his last appearance on record with the Swedish studio band Impulsia, on the album Expressions which was released on 24 September 2009 via Impulsia Music and under Riverside Records. Death[edit] Jacob was found dead from suicide in his home in Kristineberg, Stockholm on 21 July 2009. He was 45 years old. Talisman vocalist Jeff Scott Soto issued the following statement: "It is with deep regret and remorse I, along with fellow members of Talisman, am announcing our brother, longtime colleague and overall greatest musician we've ever played with, Marcel Jacob, is no longer with us as of today, Tuesday July 21, 2009. PETER OLSSON Peter Olsson (born 21 October 1961 in Danderyd, Stockholm County) was the original bassist in the Swedish Heavy metal band Force[1], which would later change its name to Europe. Olsson formed Force in Upplands Väsby in 1979, together with vocalist and keyboardist Joey Tempest, guitarist John Norum and drummer Tony Reno. Olsson left the band in 1981 and was replaced by John Levén. Apparently Olsson left because he felt that Joey Tempest had "stolen his girlfriend".[2] Since then, Olsson has played in bands such as Power (with Talisman members Marcel Jacob and Christopher Ståhl) and Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force. KEE MARCELLO Birth name Kjell Hilding Lövbom Born 20 February 1960 Ludvika, Sweden Genres Hard rock, heavy metal, glam metal Instruments Guitar, vocals, keyboards Years active 1978–present Associated acts Easy Action, Mikael Rickfors, Europe, Kee Marcello's K2, Matthew Scott Kee Marcello (born Kjell Hilding Lövbom, 20 February 1960 in Ludvika, Sweden) is a Swedish guitarist/vocalist, best known as the former guitarist in the hard rock bands Europe and Easy Action. He is currently pursuing his solo career. Career Throughout the years, Marcello played in various bands such as Stetson Cody Group, Norbom Hilke and Noice, before he formed Easy Action in 1982. They released two albums, Easy Action and That Makes One. Easy Action was the first Scandinavian band to sign a worldwide major label deal with a US label, with the Warner label Sire Records in 1983. Zinny J. Zan later left the band and was replaced by Tommy Nilsson. They recorded That Makes One in 1985-1986 and released it in 1986, only months before Marcello left the band in November 1986 to join Europe, replacing their original guitarist John Norum. In 1993 he formed/joined Red Fun together with Easy Action drummer Fredrik Von Gerber and the same year they released their first and only album Red Fun. In 1995 he embarked on his solo career by the release of his first solo album Shine On. and his fifth and most recent one, Scaling Up was released by Frontiers Records in October 2016. During 2013-2014 he starred in the Swedish production of the Broadway musical Rock Of Ages (musical) in which he got to portray himself in a specially written role. Since 2015 he has participated in different versions of Rock Of 80's which did a sold out stadium tour of Sweden during the fall of 2016. He is currently on tour with the Kee Marcello Band. Marcello had previously collaborated with Europe vocalist Joey Tempest on the hugely successful single "Give a Helpin' Hand" for the charity project 'Swedish Metal Aid'. He also produced the platinum selling record and subsequently gave Tempest his very first hit single. The success of this collaboration was probably instrumental for the decision of asking Marcello to become the new guitar player. When he joined Europe in 1986, the band had not done any extensive touring outside Sweden, but that was about to change when "The Final Countdown" eventually reached number one on the singles charts in 25 countries. In 1987, Europe embarked on "The Final Countdown World Tour", their first world tour. In 1988, Marcello recorded his first studio album with Europe, Out of This World, at Olympic Studios in London. Later that same year they embarked on the "Out of This World Tour", which started off with a US leg together with Def Leppard. Ex-Thin Lizzy keyboardist Darren Wharton's group Dare supported the band on the European leg of the tour. Marcello, who in 1987 emigrated with the rest of the band to the Caribbean in an attempt to escape the then ferocious Swedish margin tax, was spending most of his time in Los Angeles when not in Providenciales on Turks and Caicos Islands. The writing and pre-production of the next album took place in LA and San Francisco. It was recorded in 1990-1991 at Enterprise Studios in Burbank, California. Prisoners in Paradise was released in 1991 and shortly after they embarked on the "Prisoners in Paradise World Tour". After the tour the band decided to go on hiatus in 1992. In 1993, Marcello joined former Easy Action drummer Freddie Von Gerber in the band Red Fun, and released a self-titled album that featured a melodic metal sound with heavy blues influences. In 1995 he released his first solo album Shine On, in the singer-songwriting tradition and therefore a take off from his previous work. During 1997–2001 Marcello produced and wrote or co-wrote songs for various artists in his own studio, "GEM Studios", in Gothenburg, Sweden. Namely, Canadian band The Moffats number one hit single "Bang Bang Boom", the title song for R&R Hall of Fame inductee Percy Sledge's 2004 album Shining Through the Rain, and 3 consecutive platinum albums for Swedish singer Pandora in Japan. He also did several guest appearances as a guitar player, like on the 1999 In Flames album Colony, contributing the second guitar solo on the song "Coerced Coexistence". In 2005, he also helped and produced Supergroupies album "Supergroupies". In 2003, Marcello released the album Melon Demon Divine under the project band name Kee Marcello's K2. The power trio consisted of Ken Sandin on bass and Snowy Shaw on drums. Over the following years of touring the band went through some member changes, with the exception of bass player Ken Sandin, who is in the band to this day. When Europe reunited with John Norum later that year, Marcello decided not to be part of the reunion. "I told them I didn't want to participate in a [new] studio album because musically, I want to go in a different kind of direction than the music Europe stands for," he said in an interview, "Then we talked for a while about doing a six-piece tour – it didn't turn out that way because of different reasons." However Marcello also made it clear he's happy that Europe reformed and are touring without him. "I think it's really great that the guys are travelling around playing all those songs to a lot of happy fans."[1] Easy Action reunited for a gig at the Sweden Rock Festival in 2006 and re-released their debut album Easy Action with some previously unreleased live recordings. Kee Marcello's K2 toured extensively all over Europe and the East during 2008–2009 and performed in the 2007 Swedish Eurovision song contest with Alannah Myles.[2] In 2009, Marcello signed a management deal with Gerry Helders (TMS Management), and started working on two new albums, due for release 2011-2012. He also became an endorsee of Gibson Guitars that year. After having more than 2,000 applicants, Marcello and TMS Management put together an audition for members to his new band at Little Halings, London, in November 2010. The band have been doing showcases at Midem in Cannes, France, and ILMC in London, and will embark on their first tour in 2012. However, this tour was cancelled because of problems with management and sponsors[3] On 19 October 2011 Marcello's autobiography, The Rock Star God Forgot, was released in Sweden, with graphic details about Marcello´s drug use.[4] An English translation will be released worldwide in 2012.[5] His third solo album, Redux: Europe, was released on 11 November 2011 in Sweden, released worldwide on 13 January 2012. It contains the brand new title track as well as re-recordings of Europe and Easy Action tracks.[5] His fourth solo album, Judas Kiss, was released on 5 April 2013.[6] In 2016, Marcello was signed to Italian label Frontiers Records and released a new solo album - "Scaling Up" - in the fall of 2016. Two tracks from the pre-Prisoners in Paradise demo LeBaron Boys were included on the album[7] Marcello is also competing in horse racing in Sweden and made the news when he was not allowed to participate in a celebrity race with sports star Patrik Sjöberg due to failing a mandatory pre-race alcohol test.[8] Discography As part of Easy Action1983: Easy Action 1986: That Makes One As part of Europe1988: Out of This World 1991: Prisoners in Paradise 1992: 1982-1992 1997: Definitive Collection 2004: Rock the Night: The Very Best of Europe 2009: The Final Countdown: The Best of Europe As Kee Marcello's K22004: Melon Demon Divine Solo albums1995: Shine On 2011: Redux: Europe 2013: Judas Kiss 2016: Scaling Up Featured with other artists1982: Noice – Europa 1986: Mikael Rickfors – Rickfors 1991: Infra-Blue, Joey Tafolla, Shrapnel 1991: Judas River, Mikael Rickfors 1991: A Bit on the Side, Torben Schmidt, Thunderstruck Records 1992: Kosmonaut Gagarins Rapport, Edin Adahl, Viva Records 1992: Back to the Roots, Ulf Wakenius, Universal Music 1993: Walter Ego, Sy Klopps, Guitar Recordings 1993: Red Fun – Red Fun, Music For Nations 1997: Happy Man Don't Kill, Mikael Rickfors, Sonet Grammofon AB 1997: Remember my name, Sand & Gold, Base Point Media 1997: Killer Bee, World Order Revolution, Freedom Records 1999: Colony, Nuclear Blast 2001: Eclipse, The Truth and a little more, z records 2002: city boy blues, Zinny J.
