A very rare original First Edition of the culturally significant 'Epigrammata et Poematia Vetera' from 1590. There have been recent new versions produced, but there are very few First Editions available.
In 1590 the French scholar and jurist Pierre Pithou, latinized as Petrus Pithoeus, 1539-1596, published this Epigrammata et poematia vetera, which includes much material from the Codex Thuaneus. Many epigrams and poems were published here for the first time. Pithou's edition is the first which bears any resemblance to what is now called the Anthologia Latina, an anthology or libellus of epigrams compiled around 500 A.D., probably in Vandal North Africa.
In a nice condition considering its age. In a vellum cover, which is complete and sound with wear to the top right corner. Cover in good condition with some marks to vellum and wear to edges. Previous owners name in pencil to early page. Internal pages are all present and are mostly clean and free from spotting, with the odd age related stain. Some pencil notes in margins. In Latin. 491 pages. 6"x3.5".
