She was the patron deity of child birth and pregnant women and her very shape inspired such pregnant associations. Unlike a real hippopotamus, she walked on two legs and could incorporate the tail of the crocodile (as in this representation) to swish away any spiritual entanglements. Made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone she has an aged green patina and is mounted on a felt based stand. The rectangular amulet is a perfect match as it depicts Tauret in the same stance but in the form of a profile relief carving. The oval amulet features the pure image of a reclining hippo with a friendly face. A replica collector card of early 20th century design further rounds out the collection with a fine illustration of Taweret with her hand resting on a dagger as a warning to any negative forces to stay away or face the wrath of Taweret's defensive tactics. Background information The principal statue depicts Taweret striding and holding a 'Sa' amulet which is a lesser known amulet that offered protection for young children, especially but not exclusively during childbirth. The promotion of it by Taweret in this statue gives the whole composition a highly charged symbol for a mother's protection during this most important time . Images sell!
