It features a convex dial signed 'Thos. Allen, Barnsley' which is enclosed in an octagonal face. The octagonal face is attached to the main housing via 3 wooden pegs (originally 4) which removes to reveal the mechanism. The brass pendulum features a woman's head and golden locks in front of the sun. Original key included. ~ Dimensions ~ The octagonal face measures 43cm acrossThe clock face measures 32cm acrossThe main housing measures 59cm tall x 13cm deep x 24.5cm wide. ~ History ~ Used in antique spring-powered mechanical watches and clocks, a fusee is a cone-shaped pulley with a spiral groove around it, wound with a cord or chain which is attached to the mainspring barrel. Fusees were used from the 15th century to the early 20th century to improve timekeeping by equalizing the uneven pull of the mainspring as it ran down. Baillie (1929). ~ Condition ~ It is in good condition throughout, with only slight cracks to the octagonal face, possibly from when originally mounted.
