Item:293336198070Mahogany veneered, triple spring powered, eight day time, hour/half hour strike and quarterly chiming Granddaughter clock. Movement marked "EMPIRE made in England", manufactured by the English Clock and Watch Manufacture Ltd (1922-1934) under the ownership of S Smith and Son, London, England. (Ownership of this clock company continued after WWII as Smith's English clocks, Ltd.) This clock dates to circa 1934. The granddaughter clock is known by its petite stature and delicate decoration. Charming in appearance, the granddaughter type clock is usually between three and five feet and the clock itself is housed in a wooden tall case. This vastly differs with the colossal size of the grandfather clock, which can reach nearly eight feet. Not developed until the 1930’s, the granddaughter clock perfectly embodies a delicate, elegant style and would be the impeccable addition to any parlour. Dial: The mahogany veneered rectangular façade in the hood contains a solid square oak bezel surrounding this applied brass fenestrated dial which consists of two concentric skeletonized brass squares with attached brass Arabic hours, steel Chippendale type rococo hands and three winding apertures for the three movement springs. The dial is unsigned. Movement: This is a solid rectangular brass plate movement connected by four tubular pillars and screwed together at the rear plate. The movement has an anchor escapement and is powered by three springs, of eight day duration, striking the hour and half hours and chiming on the quarter hours on a set of eight rods, four to either side with eight movement hammers, four to a side, with a long pendulum and brass bob swinging inside the case at the back of the movement. The movement has round screwed down pendulum bridges. The back plate is cast with the Empire name around a globe and 'Made in England' below. Condition: Overall very good to excellent. Well made design typical of Art Deco in England Extra info: English Clock and Watch Manufacture Ltd (19221934, under S Smith and Son).
