An original aquatint etching by Charles Hunt (1803-1877) after a painting by the great equestrian artist John Frederick Herring Snr (1795-1865). It depicts the racehorse Emilius, shown standing in a walled paddock. Titled below 'Emilius, Bred by Mr Udney in 1820, out of Emily by Stamford her dam, by Whiskey out of Grey Diamond. The property of Thomas Thornhill Esq'.  Further printed detail is hidden by the mount however the print is dedicated the horse's owner Thomas Thornhil and was published in September 1832 by S J Fuller at their Sporting Gallery in Rathbone Place, one of a series depicting famous racehorses of the time.  Emilius was a Newmarket bred racehorse who as a three year old in 1823 won seven of his ten starts, including the Epsom Derby, ridden throughout by veteran 57 year old jockey Frank Buckle.  The horse was retired in 1824 and put to stud in Thetford, Norfolk, becoming British Champion Sire in 1830 and 1831. Printed on cream coloured wove paper and in excellent condition.  A rare find which combines the work of two of the best known 19th century equestrian artists.  Similar aquatints by Hunt after Herring have reached over £1500 at auction (Philips 2001).   Presented in a antique gilt wood frame, most of the gilt worn off.  Glazed and ready to hang. Please excuse reflection/flash in the photographs which have been taken through the glass. Measures 47.5 x 53.5cm including the frame, the image only (without title area) is 27 x 37cm.
