Seller: prepceryu0 (6) 87.5%, Location: Gloucester, Ships to: GB, Item: 132540406949 Surmounted by a seated artist, this fine clock is of a quality in cast and finish that is above reproach. Beneath the mercury gilding, remnants of the hand chasing are visible across all surfaces, evidence of the chiseleur's labor in carefully filing the bronze sculpture into perfect realism. The figure is draped in a complex folded cape, his hand rested along scrolls of sketches over a square pedestal, propped in a moment of thoughtful repose. The squared case of the clock features an etched clock face with a Roman Numeral chapter ring and pierced hands. The movement was designed by Pierre-César Honoré Pons, a Parisian clockmaker who set up shop in 1803 and is generally recognized as being most active between the years of 1807-1846. It is a silk suspension movement, the back stamped "F.C.", "1224", "Pons" and "7 - 2". This is a clock of very fine quality and presence. Literature: Encyclopédie de La Pendule Française du Moyen Age au XXe siècle, Pierre Kjellberg, 1997, p. 374, 376 (two clocks by Pons c. 1827 and 1830) Measurements: 24" high x 12 3/8" wide x 7 1/2" deep; 9" from surface to silk suspension; movement diameter approximately 3 3/4" Condition Report: Some tarnish to gilt surface throughout, particularly the back, some handling wear. Dial heavily tarnished. Minute hand has a slight outward bend. Element missing from artist's hand. Brass "knob" originality unknown. The clock is missing it's pendulum and key; movement is untested for functionality.
