There are quite a few sellers who claim their clocks are early Georgian, but it is not often the case. For info please go to "How to Date Your Grandfather Clock"on Internet. William Giscard was a clock maker who worked in Ely, was born in 1749 and died in 1812. The case is in good original condition, the long shaped case door with a moulded edge, complete with its lock and key and original brass hinges. There is a makers mark” HF” stamped on the door and the backboard. The base has canted corners and double plinth. The glazed hood door is flanked by reeded columns at each side with brass capitals and an arch above and is surmounted by pagoda top. The clock retains its original backboard, which has holes where it had been attached to the wall and a few woodworm holes, long treated and NOT active. Remember, the clock is original and is around 250 years old!! The 12” arched dial is of the early painted form with floral spandrels, “strawberry” gilded borders and a bird in the arch. The chapter ring having hours represented by Roman Numerals, with an outer minute ring. The centre of the dial has the working seconds dial above the calendar dial and makers signature, and twin winding holes. It is possible that Giscard made the mechanism himself rather than buy in a mass-produced movement from Birmingham and there were some replacements made to the mechanism later. The clock strikes one additional hour from 6 o'clock to 11 and will need a minor adjustment by a specialist. The two train, 8 day movement has 4 pillars and rack striking on a bell. The clock comes complete with its original old weights along with a winding key.
