Seller: bearmountain635 (2,390) 100%, Location: Kent, Ships to: Free Local Pickup, Item: 283793601418 Samuel Underhill of Wolverhampton, England. A mahogany veneered long case clock. This attractive long case clock features a painted dial that is signed by the Maker “Samuel Underhill of Wolverhampton (Staffs), England.” Samuel Underhill is listed in Brian Loomes reference book, “Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World.” Loomes lists him at work between 1826 - 1835 and notes he is also registered as a bottle jack maker. The base is constructed with canted corners standing on flared French feet while the case is primarily veneered in mahogany with a rich, warm chestnut brown finish. The base panel and case are decoratively inlaid. The waist section features forward corners that are fitted with fully turned columns that are decoratively turned with rings and spirals. The waist door is shaped at the top and is cross banded in rosewood. The bonnet door is veneered in mahogany and fitted with glass. This opens to allow one access to the painted dial, consisting of seconds dial and date dial in addition to hours/minutes. The iron dial is decoratively painted, the four spandrel areas with floral motifs and at the top Greek temples. In the arch is a lunar calendar and moon phase mechanism. The Clockmaker’s signature and working location are clearly signed below the centre arbor. This movement is of brass construction and is good quality. Four turned pillars support the two brass plates and hardened steel shafts support the polished steel pinions and brass gearing. The winding drums are grooved. The escapement is designed as a recoil format. The movement is weight driven and designed to run eight days on a full wind and is a two train or a time and strike design having a rack and snail striking system. As a result, it will strike each hour on the hour. This is done on a cast iron bell which is mounted above the movement. This clock stands 8 feet tall and was made circa 1830.In good working order, newly serviced. Please note there are signs of wear and repair (please see photos) as you would expect in an 19th Century antique but overall it is in nice condition for it's age. Also, there is a gilt sphere which fits on the top of the clock (see last photo) but not shown in main picture as it would make the clock too tall for current ceiling height!
