An English mahogany single fusee verge bracket clock, 6 inch silvered arched dial signed Mangaar, London to the arch, with A-frame verge movement, rare maintaining power, and original verge escapement within a stepped case surmounted by a caddy top and brass carrying handle, 17" high (folded handle).
This is a rare gem of the simplest yet most elegant design. Little wear on the movement. All edges of all components crisp and unworn. No major repairs, original screws etc. This fine movement has precision and adjustment features similar to those found in chronometers, including fine contrate and crownwheel adjustment and maintaining power (to the spring while being wound).
Serviced and running well.
The original case has a nicely patinated original finish, and possible original thin wavey glasses. No major repairs. The case survives in excellent condition, only minor shrinkage of the movement support platform; easily remedied if desired.
John Mangaar (1746-1809) was a chronometer / duplex escapement watch maker living in Maiden Lane, Covent Garden with apprenticeship ties to John Ellicott the noted chronometer maker. His father, a Dane living in London, was reputed to be the illegitimate son of King Frederick lV of Denmark.
