Mahogany and mahogany veneered, weight driven, 8-day time and hourly striking, longcsae clock, made by George Ellis, OakenGates, (Shropshire), England, circa 1842. Description Case: 220cm x 27cm x 52.5cm mahogany longcase clock. The hood with broken arch pediment and 'caddy -top' returns to either side. The pediment is surmounted by three brass ball and spire finials, the central finial on a plinth with keystone below. The arch terminals are decorated with applied brass rosettes. An arched veneered cornice sits over the arched glazed dial door with brass pull. The door is flanked by two free standing fluted mahogany colonnettes with brass capitals and bases. A concave moulding transitions down to the trunk section with its three quarter length d mahogany door outlined in light cross-banded veneers. The top of the door has an undulating 'angel-wing' shape and is flanked by full case columns to either side of the door, each with vertical light and dark stringing resting on rectilinear plinths below. A small horizontal light and dark rectilinear panel sits below the main door. A triple stepped and canted moulding leads down to the broad base with similar corners. There is a large central veneered circle and the periphery of the base is outlined in light coloured veneer strips. The clock rests on its base moulding sitting flat to the floor. Dial: A white painted arched dial with Roman hours, closed minutes, subsidiary seconds below the twelve, arched calendar aperture under the dial centre, matching skeletonised brass 'crescent moon' hands and the name, "Geo. Ellis, OakenGates". The spandrels are painted in twin roses and the theme is repeated in all four corners (typical of many English dials from c. 1835-1845) with the spandrels filled with paint. The lunette is a traditional English fox hunt landscape scene. Movement: Resting on its original seatboard is a solid brass plate movement with knopped brass pillars, anchor escapement, cut steel pinions, steel arbors and grooved winding drums, all powered by two heavy weights, of eight day duration and striking an overhead bell hourly. A long seconds pendulum with bob swings inside the case. Condition: The dial fits its wooden dial mat perfectly inside the hood. The movement and dial belong to this specific case and all three items began life together in the mid-19th century. The case is missing some strips of veneer, mostly in the hood, and easily repaired. The trunk door is being reinforced with wooden boards, most likely to prevent any further warping, a worthwhile restoration and not detrimental to value. The holes in the backboard are from many screws and nails securing the case to the wall over many years in order to prevent tipping and these are not detrimental to value. The case originally had feet. A very handsome example of English provincial longcase clockmaking at the midpoint of the 19th century., and a genuine example of Shropshire clockmaking. Date Circa 1842 Height 2200 mm Extra Notes George Ellis is a listed clockmaker working in OakenGates and nearby Shiffnal, Shropshire, England during the 1840s. Age: Antique, Pre-1900, Type: Longcase/ Grandfather Clock, Sub-Type: Grandfather, Material: Mahogany, Clock Type: Longcase/ Grandfather Clock, Features: 8-Day
