EDWARD WELLER
Edward Weller (1 July 1819 – May 1884) FRGS was a British engraver and cartographer who was one of the first to produce maps using lithography . He was a "London-based engraver, cartographer and publisher, working from offices in Red Lion Square and later, Bloomsbury", who produced detailed steel plate engraved maps. He was the nephew of Sidney Hall, the publisher, who paid for Edward's apprenticeship fees. He engraved maps for many notable English mapmakers and gained membership of the Royal Geographical Society in 1851 on the recommendation of John Arrowsmith. In due course he inherited Sidney Hall's map business and dutifully follow in Arrowsmith's footsteps as the unofficial geographer to the RGS. Weller embraced lithography where his best known work appeared in Cassell's Weekly Dispatch which , as published weekly, and hi s map collection was issued in various editions from 1855 till the early 1880's. In May of 1884 Weller died leaving behind a widow and his son, Francis Sidney Weller who continued to run the family map business.
