He succeeded his father, also John, who had been admitted to the Clockmaker's Company in 1696. John took over after his fathers death in 1733 and in 1738 was elected Fellow of the Royal Society. As well as supplying clocks to the Spanish royal family, it is without doubt that one of his most outstanding acheivements was designing the ‘Ellicott Pendulum’, an amazing compensated pendulum. Ellicott pendulums were a fantastic feat of engineering which far exceeded anything else of the day. In 1971 his son became partner in the business and from 1760 their clocks were signed 'Ellicott'. From 1769 onwards the signature became 'John Ellicott and Son'. This stunning 8 day mahogany longcase clock with bolt and shutter work is rack striking with a deadbeat escapement. Its beautiful brass, arch-topped dial has a strike silent subsiduary dial on the top left and a fast/slow subsiduary dial on the top right. It has a matted centre with brass spandrels, silvered chapter rings and a nameplate. The weights are brass shelled and it has a large brass pendulum. The hood is embellished with green silk behind fretwork. This cherished clock has been kept in the same family for over 70 years and has been well maintained and kept in excellent condition. THIS CLOCK WILL BE FULLY SERVICED BEFORE COLLECTION OR DELIVERY. DELIVERY AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST DEPENDING ON LOCATION. For further details or to make an offer please contact us on 01603 403684.
